Items dropped when a dwarf dies - automatically flagged
« on: April 28, 2008, 10:46:00 pm »

I don't mind dwarf's dying. However, the single most annoying setting in this game, is the fact that when a dwarf dies and drops his stuff, everyone else runs to pick up his stuff. In the majority of cases, whatever has killed the dwarf (trap, fall, water, lava, etc. Pretty much anything but starving or dieing of thirst) is probably going to kill the guys coming to get his stuff.

Suggestion: Automatically mark all items dropped when a dwarf dies, including his/her corpse, as forbidden. If we want it, we can find it and reclaim it.

This is especially annoying for people who embark into dangerous locations embark into locations that are in the middle of large, terrifying wildernesses. More often then not, caravans get ganked when they leave, and you don't get a death message when they die (As far as I can tell). So suddenly, you have all this random loot laying around, and your dwarvfs are rushing out of your fortress to get it. You either have to wait until they get to the loot location to figure out where it is and then forbid it, or try and extrapolate based on their direction where the loot is. Even then, if you miss anything they are still gonna go charging for it.

I'd say a good majority of all deaths that occur at my fortresses occur because of this 'bug', and it is pretty much the only time when I save scum.

This would be a nice feature for the
  • rders menu -- I wouldn't want it to occur automatically, since trying to remember every old body would be a pain in the butt.

I wonder if there's room for another flag on items and buildings: "combat-sensitive".  Something that is combat-sensitive will not be tasked (and all tasks will cancel) if there are any "Invader" or "Hostile" objects on the map.  Bodies and such automatically would be declared "combat sensitive", by default.  While there are still enemies left, the civilians will not try to gather them up.  Once the last enemy is killed, however, the civilians will go nuts.

A possible alteration would be to have multiple fortress phases:

    1) Red phase, which occurs as soon as invaders or hostile enemies are discovered.  All combat-sensitive objects are off-limits.  All wounded dwarves are left in the field.
    2) Yellow phase, which occurs as soon as the invaders or hostile enemies are slain.  All combat-sensitive objects are still off-limits.  All wounded dwarves are collected.
    3) Green phase, which occurs after the last wounded dwarf has been collected.  All combat-sensitive objects are now considered available for collection.

You could still manually undesignate things from combat-sensitivity, regardless of phase, in which case the dwarves would perform their normal (current) behaviour.

The ideal situation would be to have "combat-sensitive", "forbidden", and "none" as a three-stage setting in the orders menu, possibly with independent settings for allies and enemies (so you can ignore the junk of the enemy, but gather the loot of your own dwarves).

i still stand fo having a "loot corpses" option, and the same could go with caravan wagons.

its stupid that when a creature dies he drops his clothing. the loot option would enable you to remove clothing and armor, but haul the corpse to the graveyard stockpile first

EDIT: and yeah, forbid all corpses and dropped items caused by death ftw

How about just forbid everything caused by violent death?  I wouldn't want all my livestock to be forbidden when they die of old age...

I like the "business as usual unless it's a siege/ambush/megabeast" situation.  Although I supposed that would still leave indigenous creatures.

Wouldn't it just be much easier that whenever you get the <poor> has been struck down! message that it auto-pauses and auto-zooms to the recently deceased rather then having to search through the whole map just to forbid (or reclaim if you have this auto-forbid) the leftover items?

But this isn't talking just his own dwarfs.
This is talking anything that wears clothes.
And the only time you get a death message is if it's your own dwarf.

Pause zoom, or simply the ability to zoom to dead creatures, would be good as well. They wouldn't be a substitute for automatically flagging death items as forbidden, but is a good idea in its own right.
