Study and Minimize (allows modern tech)
« on: April 30, 2008, 03:57:00 am »

Do you want your Dwarfs to create cars, guns and computers? I have a solution!

For example, you want a gun.
You build walls for the shape and insides, catapults for the firing bit and mechanisms for the trigger, etc. You then highlight the relevant bits of your oversized gun, create a task in the Study and Minimize Workshop and after several days/months of research and minimization your Dwarfs have created an extremely basic gun item!
But why stop there? The possibilities are endless! Obviously the player will need to specify some variables like whether the item is a weapon, tool, etc.

Most people, including Toady, answer no.   Also, this seems like a really awkward and un-intuitive way for these things to come about and be implemented anyways.

Edit:  That is to say, a big hallway with a catapult in it, shrunk down, works nothing like a gun would.

No, because I don't want a single empire to take over the whole world.

Cars: draft animals for hauling and even carts on rails in the fortress would be ok. No extrasomatic portable engines. I think dwarves should be able to build a steam chamber to generate power, but it would be a waste of fuel that could be used for smithing. So a mad prestige project is technically possible, but it would put severe constraints on your other activities instead of boosting them.

Guns: If saltpeter and brimstone/sulphur remain as rare as they are now, I'm in favor of gunpowder.. with all its traditional unreliability. Assault rifles, no. Stationary cannons could be nice, if they need to be large-scale enough. And the cannon balls should take 81 iron bars or so, and be cast separately, and take a herd of horses to transport.

Computers: I'd like more refined mechanical triggers, and a linking system that is more clear. So you have to build a program using complicated mechanical contraptions, instead of having a 1*1 square that allows you to command every trap and door in the fortress.

I think it would be cool. You could fly to outer space and go to other worlds, build with modern tools, fight wars in different many ways,  grow food on a massive scale, trade with more, and other cool modern things.  I won't happen but I think I would be fun.

But if it was to happen,  I wouldn't want time to go by really fast.  I don't like it when you start a game at some ancient time and 20 minutes later i have laser beams killing people.  And who knows, maybe the person who would come up with the idea of guns is never born, or dies before he/she can share the idea.

This sounds like a civ game, on a larger scale.
