To check go to Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System.

Should give you SP (service pack), bit and OS.

That error might be caused by the command prompt not being in administrative power thingy.
Make sure to change that  ;D.

Oh yeah... type "cmd.exe" into the little search box. When it pops up, right click and Run As Administrator, if you haven't-- that's hopefully the only problem.
