You think we're joking? We never joke about keeping the ASCII!

Don't go around murdering people just yet. It's going to be a long, long while before there is any kind of "official" graphics overhaul. I'm not going to speak for Toady, but I'll tell you this: ASCII is charming but is also horribly obtuse except for the most hardcore of players. And as the game becomes more complex, it will being even more obtuse if it remains ASCII. But, you can rest assured should the unthinkable happen and the game has the opulent trappings of graphics that you could always remodel the graphics back into austere letters and symbols.

I can't think of a single roguelike where this windowing was done well.  NethackW annoyed me; AngbandW annoyed me but was more tolerable.  Are there better examples of this out there?

I mean, I like it all in concept very much.

As for the ASCII graphics:  Moving to a graphical tileset can really screw with games like Nethack.  I don't use any graphical tilesets for DF yet, but it was pretty clearly made for it...I mean look at the Elephant/Elf problem, and all the many noble types with the same character.

...I think IVAN was good for graphics but I can't remember if its menus were windowed, I think they weren't.

Derail:
I'm wondering if Fenrir and Armok even read the OP. He wasn't talking about your precious ASCII Characters  (Which still aren't ASCII seeing as how they are rendered in OpenGL) He stated pretty clearly he was more interested in allowing more control over the interface.

Re-rail:
I've been playing since the Z level was introduced and I would love to be able to move the various windows so I could display more information in an easier to read layout. If this became an option I think I would have the play window on the top. The commands and maps would be below that. I'd be able to have all three on screen at the same time while still maximizing play window size. <3

If menus were split off into separate windows, it'd be nice if they worked a bit like Winamp (I've used 5.0.8 and earlier so I can't speak for newer versions) where the separate pieces can "snap" together and be moved as one unit but can also be pulled apart and moved separately.

It would also be neat to be able to open multiple windows of same type. So you could have like four small fortress views instead of one large, and each one would show a different z-layer or something. And we might even create one of those small lock-on-dwarf tracking views.

Sergius: that's not nice, man.  I saw the image before reading the text, and was all like "HOLY CRAP, how'd he get it to DO that, I want IwantIwant!"

Tease.  :)

Stop acting like a moron. Seriously, you piss me off to no end with your roleplaying. If you cant handle a goddamn suggestion with maturity, shutup and just dont comment, or *emote* like you always seem to do. Be helpful or fuck off.
