Age of DF gamers
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:58:47 pm »

Hey,

I've been wondering, how old is the average DF gamer?
I'm bored so I'm going to submit my hypothesis on this... :D

DF is basically, a ASCII game. There are graphical mods for this, but it is basically an ASCII game. Most young people, aged 17 and under, have no time for these 'retro' games... Opting instead to play high-end games like Crysis and Fallout 3 (WOOOOO!!!!)

Considering the amount of modding, I would say that people generally well seasoned and experienced with computers would play these, although there are the odd exceptions.

As a general rule of thumb, elderly people are not... 'computer-savvy'...
That rules out anyone generally above the age of 45, in my opinion.

This basically leads me to estimate that the majority of DF gamers are around...

20-35 years old?

I may be wrong... I may be right.

Please post your age(ish) and comments pwease :D

As for me?

Well, I break the first rule (Young people don't like DF) as well, I'm 13.

Rule #1 broken here as well, though not quite by as much: I'm 17.

Also, there was a poll a while back about ages... it was about 8-9 months ago I think... I'm pretty sure we've had a bunch of new people join since then.

As was mentioned there, not all DF players are active on (or necessarily even join) the forum, and I know of at least 2 people who're on the forum, but've never played DF. (You know who you are!)

Just turned 24.

My computer has difficulties with anything more complex than Dwarf Fortress, but fortunately this is normal for me.  While I didn't have much of a gamer's upbringing, I educated myself quickly between the ages of 14 and 17 on the subject of ASCII and text-based adventure games.(Colossal Cave and Rogue being two of my favorites.  Nethack was always a bit too random for my tastes, but I've played a bit of it, too.)

Dwarf Fortress gets attention from websites and forums that are centered around gaming, it just brings in the teens and the twenty-somethings that are even further up (further down?) on the nerd/geek ladder than the people that play "mainstream" games or whatever.

This also explains why Various Nonsense was closed. ;)

I am 23...

Rather.  Until I turned sixteen, there was never more than one console in the house at a time, and computers were made largely of hand-me-down parts.

Now I personally own three consoles, as does my little sister, and my younger brother recently bought a Wii with his graduation money.

'Course, I'm still playing ASCII-graphics games on computers made with half-decade-old tech.

Colossal Cave on an HP 200lx.  It was an early, monochrome PC, 3 inches by 6 inches by 3/4 of an inch, clamshell case, ran on a pair of AA batteries, which powered an Intel 386 with 4 MB shared disk and system memory if you were lucky.  It could run Windows 3.0, slowly, but not Windows 3.1.  That required a 486, I think.  Not that I ever tried running anything but stock Dos 6.0.

I also managed to write a couple of school reports on the thing.

18 here, I found DF about a year ago now I think..

I generally find older games to be more fun than alot of the stuff you find nowadays. And while technically DF isn't that old, most older games have a fairly steep learning curve due to lack of documentation available.

Anyways, now I'm just waiting for the next version to be released!
