1240 x 1024, I think...

But I build my computer in mind of the future...

I'd say dual core will be out-dated in 3 to 5 years...

Maybe, who knows and who cares? Right now dual core is much better, and that is what matters.  :)
Me, because money is hard to come by here...
'side, I'd hate having to upgrade tri-yearly or so....

Yeah you might want to get a better monitor, then. You could save the old one and have a two screen rig if you want.

Anyway, start looking for a graphics card already. The nvidia geforce 9 series are pretty good for their price, considering that they're better and cheaper than the old high-end standard geforce 8 chips.

Here's how I see it:
A $3000 computer will be as good as a $1000 computer in 3 years. And as good as a $500 one in 5 years.
If you build a $1000 computer, it'll be obsolete in 3 years.
You save $1000.

I don't know about that, Muz. Before I built this one, I used a seven year old computer that we bought initially for about a thousand bucks. It was pretty good with modern games for quite some time. We only replaced the graphics card once, to keep up with the directx versions.

You gotta give your build :P The $1000 thing was for laptops, btw. Haven't had a desktop in a while.

My target has always been a little medium-end, like to play the Total War games on 2X antialiasing, full shadows, med lighting, full grass & textures. Upgrade the gfx card or RAM when a new gfx card comes out. An above average processor can last for quite a while, at least as long as the motherboard does when it comes to games.

But if you mean DF, I think only processor matters, and certainly not quad core. DF is the only reason to overclock any computer these days :P

blahblahblah...

My machine, by the way, is this:
Code: [Select]
Monitor:         $129.99 Acer 19" widescreen LCD
Case:            $59.99 Cooler Master Aluminum ATX Mid-tower
Keyboard:        $19.99 Microsoft curvy keyboard
Mouse:           $9.99 Microsoft optical mouse
Motherboard:     $134.99 Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P
Processor:       $179.99 3.16GHz Core 2 Duo E8500
Processor's fan: $32.99 Arctic Cooling Fan+Heatsink (got it in a combo with processor)
Video card:      $129.99 Nvidia GeForce 9800GT
PSU:             $89.99 Corsair 550W
Memory:          $52.99 G-Skill 4GB (2x2GB) 1066MHz DDR2
HDD:             $74.99 Western Digital Caviar 640GB 7200RPM SATA
Disk drive:      $17.99 SATA DVD-ROM
OS:              $89.99 Windows XP SP3
Speakers:        $39.99 decent quality stereo speakers
Total price = $1052.86 (without sales tax crap)

That was when I bought it, by the way. I recently installed Windows 7 RC on a spare partition (which I keep empty for things like this).
It really helps when you have nice neighbors to do favors for. One of them is giving me his "old" 9800 GT because he recently built an i7 machine with a 285.

Don't buy nvidea 9xxx series. It is all old technology. The 9800 GT is pretty much the same as the 8800 GT. What you really want is ATI at mid range. Nvidea is better at the upper end of the scale, not in the area for those with a budget. The HD 4830 will out perform the 9800 GT and that is at the low end of ATI. Buy an ATI HD 4850, 4770 or 4870 if you want a gaming computer in a budget.

IndonesiaWarMinister: Get the same comp as Peewee :P I have idea about gfx cards today, so you might want to follow A_Fey_Dwarf's choice too. I've been happy with using slightly old NVidia cards, though.. just saying.

I agree, it's kinda pointless. Either buy a "factory OCed" 8800, or a new Nvidia card [200 series].

>.> Yes the 9800 GT is pretty much the same as the 8800 GT... but the 9800 is cheaper.

9800 GT = $120
8800 GT = Wait do they sell them anymore? I know they did four months ago... >.> I seem to remember ~$200 or more
