Dwarven-English Translator
« on: June 29, 2009, 10:52:20 pm »

Here's a neat little toy I've written. I am aware that someone has already beaten me to it, but that was only a one-way Dwarven-to-English translator. This lets you type in a sentence in English and it will translate any words it recognizes into Dwarven. It also allows you to type any sentence in Dwarven and it will translate any words it recognizes into English.

Go on, break it: http://divineright.org:1049/cgi/translate.html

Sorry about the funky URL.

I didn't post this in the Modding section as I don't really consider it a utility so much as a toy. I apologize in advance if that was wrong of me.

Note: Read the instructions at the top of the page. It's a little weird in how it handles things.

what dwarven language is toady's dwarves speaking?  once you figure that out you can get a pretty massive database to use for the translator.

As far as we know, it isn't a real language.

Yeah - it has no grammar, just a vocabulary.

That's what makes the REAL LIFE LANGUAGE projects hard.
REAL HARD.

Even to immortals like us.

Oh, by that, I mean the changing of the language files in the game into some RL human language

I hope it's not missing anything in the language files, being as how I'm kind of reading straight off of them (though they are slightly modified). Tell me if it is, though.

Also, I should mention that I'm intentionally not fixing the fish_verb bug (fish_verb and fish_animal are different words), as there really is no other way to distinguish between them. I guess I could make it understand fish(v) and fish(n) or something, but it's going to end up being clunky either way. The one thing I really want to get working is separation by non-space characters. It shouldn't be choking on newlines like it is.

Note that while it doesn't have biscuit, it does have bread. So there you go.

Hm. The issue appears to be that it's using GET, which means that it's using the URL to transfer the text between pages. The answer is to just convert anything that fits that pattern back, which is relatively simple now that I think about it...

Biscuit is not in language files. Strange when biscuits are bacbone of dwarven diet.
