Cube 2: "Sauerbraten"
« on: July 13, 2009, 06:47:06 am »

So, I found this game a while ago, downloaded it, gave it a whirl. It was loads of fun, but I couldnt get multiplayer to work, and making block towers got old fast. I recently redownloaded it, (like, an hour ago) and im having a blast.

Its a game where the entire engine is based on cubes, which you can edit in real time. Check it out.

go to http://www.sauerbraten.org/ for great cube justice!

I spent some time playing the multiplayer a while back, it was nice as it runs great on my shitty internet, and 250 ping actually works with it. I never got into the singleplayer mode or messed around with the editor though. Fast paced, especially in instagib ctf games (which are apparently the most popular). It's fun, but got old after a while.

It would be a good game to get together to build a fortress in.
The editor is quite nice for being in-game.

Bump, because I found out about this game and it's totally awesome. We should go and play a co-op editing game together (it's great fun, but the servers who aren't locked are full of griefers and such.).

Even better, you can have players run around on your creation WHILE you are making it. Fun times.

I went and found a french server today, too. Yay!

I tried the original Cube game a while back, and I couldn't figure out how to edit things, and those amorphous blobs that the game has me believe are enemies always killed me faster then I could kill them. This seems like an improvement upon the old one, though, so I'll probably check it out.

Yeah, it has really improved over the first. Try the "Lost" campaign, it's so awesome.

And you just need someone to teach you the basics to start editing, really. You have to have a whatchacallit scroller thingy on your mouse, through.

It's called a scroll wheel, I believe.

I remember trying this a while ago, a very intuitive building system that, in my opinion, one ups that of Minecraft and such other games.
Although when I went to multiplayer I couldn't actually find any servers to play on.

Awesome edit:

I found a playlist that, from first glance, look relatively helpful with getting used to construction.
Available here.

Download the game, start the game, hit the `/~ key, type, without quotes: "connect 64.234.4.72 0 toadyone" and hit enter, and you'll be whisked off to a magical private server hosted on my computer. Exactly what you do there is largely up to you; cooperative editing is still pretty much a mystery to me. In fact most of the game is, for now. But I figured it'd be good to get a server up and running anyway, 'specially since I'm running a Minecraft one already.

I got it working yesterday, as with minecraft.

I might come to the server later.

I tried joining but couldn't: It seems that they released a new version since my last download.

Then I could join, but nobody else was there.

I checked the documentation, and I think I know how to enable coop edit mode. I will try joining and then try to use the command. It might or might not work, but if it does, it does, and if it doesn't, it almost certainly would for the host, if they read this.

Edit: almost certainly host-only.
For refrence, it appears to be "mode 1", and will take effect on map change, setting the game to co-op edit mode.

Edit again: It currently is in coop edit mode. Maybe my attempt to change it worked? I don't know if I am even still playing the server.
