Also note that we have the management technology to get around most of the old problems now. A workshop can be restricted based on skill or simply restricted for all but a few select Dwarves (through the manager), miners don't drop stone from their work based on skill anymore, and stockpile links can prevent hobbyists from snapping up vital strategic resources.

I would keep a close eye on the dwarf who vivisects squirrels for fun though...

Even if you found a suitable opening, I doubt it would prove all too satisfying. And it might leave some nasty wounds, depending on the moral high ground's geology.

I was thinking about all of the ways I could easily prevent them from doing their hobbies without resorting to a new mechanic as well. However a simple, built in way to designate where and what is allowed for hobbyist would be nice.

I also dont see some of those things as hobbies and as some one mentioned there are more natural hobbies to choose from like collecting rocks, or macabre trophies, or drawing etc etc. Things like collecting rocks and other objects could easily be restricted so that dwarfs did not gather things for their collection from stockpiles or from freshly created materials, like all that ore you just mined.

I like this simply because I like any thing that makes the dwarfs seem more like actual people.

How about hobbies not related to work? As suggested above, collecting stuff like coins (or anything else, all hail the RNG) might be a good hobby. There may be other candidates. For example, what if each of the day-to-day activities could be a hobby? Sleeping, eating, bathing, chatting... Everyone tends to find pleasure in different activities, so why not?

Work is already a source of positive thoughts, so why don't we just assume that every dwarf likes his job? He has a skill in it, so it's a way of self-fulfillment for him. Dwarves disliking their jobs would make selecting a suitable dwarf for the job even more painful than it is now. My point is, again, that work-related hobbies are rather redundant.

Update: I thought of a nice hobby. Dwarves might like wandering and looking around, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the nature. Of course that might prove dangerous, but that hardly stopped anyone. There might also be some sense in devising an algorithm to calculate the natural beauty of some certain spot, taking into account all visible surroundings and the observer's preferences.
