Fortification drains and magma...
« on: July 08, 2009, 10:04:18 pm »

So I have a magma pipe right on the edge of my map with the top exposed and surrounded by a heavy forest.  I had the brilliant idea of going down a few z levels and draining a couple levels of the pipe off the edge of the map with the fortifications carved into the edge tile trick like I have been doing with water.  However, it appears as if the magma is not flowing off the edge like water does?

IIRC, magma does not flow off map using Fortifications. It moves very slowly, too.

Thanks for the verification.  I was sort of hoping that i just wasnt waiting long enough but further experimentation was causing me to think otherwise.  I guess I will just dig a magma cistern and drain the pipe off into that.  I guess the pipe will still refill but that should at least give me time to build a wall around the top of the pipe to keep the critters in.

Channel a mote around it. That should be nice and quick.

Magma does not flow off the edge of the map at all. Even on the surface.

I know it is silly, but I like making as small an impact on the surface as possible, especially in forested areas, so channeling out a moat, while quick and easy, would leave me with an ugly scar on my beautiful landscape.  :P

I've done that before and still had the imps light the world on fire. Exposed magma pipes suck.

Hrm.

Tricky to deal with the open end and keep the landscape unmarred...

If you have a river, you could possibly tap into it underground, leading a tunnel towards the pipe.  Once next to it, you can used a pump or two to raise the water up and dump it onto the magma.  Eventually this will cap the top with obsidian, and you can dismantle the pump(s), leaving only a single tile of water exposed to the surface.

Of course, if you pipe opening isn't in a depression, you may have to put up walls around it till it caps, then remove those as well.

FYI, it took me about a full year to cap my volcano via a 1 tile wide diversion.

In the traditional sense of the word?  No, he's been dissolved in magma.

Yea thats what I ended up doing.  My first few tries ended up in cataclysmic destruction so instead of having my dwarves attract attention by dinking around at the rim of the full pipe I dug out a fairly large cistern next to the pipe a few levels down and drained off the top 2 levels into the cistern making it so my dwarves were able to build the wall in peace.  The pipe has now refilled completely and I have a nice little cistern of magma to mess with.

Not to bump too hard but... enacted in 'the last 20 minutes' time:

OHGODOHGODOHGODOHGODOHGODOHGODOHGODOHGOD

Magmafall in my legendary-engraved great hall, drained via map-edge-fortification, OHGODOHGODOHGOD
filling up! Its spilling over the floor! Search the forums!

magma does not flow off map using Fortifications.
Why didn't anyone tell me this!!?

New fort time. I guess I'll have some fun dismantling every door and pumping it down the residential hallways.

edit: Btw, why do magmafalls not generate happy thoughts? They're extra dwarvenlike over those sissy 'water'falls.

Magma does not drain off the edge of the map at all.

I've exploited this for pretty much the perfect defense in my latest fort:

It's the mist that generates the happy thoughts, not the waterfall itself, and falling magma doesn't generate mist (you only get that during a cavein).

If you want a magmafall to be useful, put it in front of your fortress and force sieges to path through it. Naturally, provide a way to switch it off so that caravans don't walk through your "magma curtain" and get incinerated.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
