How Stones/Gems/Ore/Metals look like
« on: August 09, 2009, 01:50:52 pm »

I always wondered how these materials really look liked, it helps greatly for the imagination when trying to picture their fortress instead of only seeing the abstracted colours.

After seeing the Bismuth picture in Piecewises' post http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=40103.msg697822#msg697822.

Actually, screw this, I found this awesome Geosciences gallery;

No wonder Dwarfs love rock, this is so awesome.

Yeah, come to think of it, it looks like a few of the colours are wrong. Orthoclase looks are LOT more creamy than golden for instance. Bauxite is far more orangey red.

Malachite just looks incredibly alien.

I have always imagined Dwarf Fortresses looking more like a boring shades of grey and murky mud. But these pictures really just add to absolute surrealism, I can really imagine the castle walls and all made of these bad ass materials taken from the underground. Just totally adds to the immersion.

Yeah, as far as colors go, DF doesn't really get the feldspars entirely right: orthoclase usually ranges from pink to white, and microcline is MOSTLY colored white; only the rare variety amazonite is bluish-green.

Awesome, right after I've build a mini-monument to myself using realgar in a successiongame, now that's a rock to use for monuments, so pretty..

Edit: Hey, where's Olivine?

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?

The Dwarves in Toady's Dev Log stole it all.

I'm glad I managed to reinvent the otherwise maddening useless stone into valuable picturesque material. I'd eventually see 3D visualizers using real material textures and Artists' drawings becoming much more vibrant.

Only Geologists and Dwarf Fortress players get this excited about pictures of rocks. Although for Geologists it's professional, whereas for Dwarf Fortress players it's more like porn.

Quartz isn't anywhere as trippy as bismuth, geothite, and, heck, even millerite sometimes. But it has scale in spades.

I must use my workshop well. I must work harder than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. He must have fun before I do. I will make it so. Before Armok I swear this creed: my workshop and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it. Amen.

This could quite well explain our forum troubles. We must import more stone images!

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.
