Hmmmm, I think we may need someone with artist skill to "find" a picture of Goblinite, preferably in the process of being smelted.

I'm a total geology geek, which is one of the things that got me initially hooked on Dwarf Fortress.

Here's Mica, whose proper name is Muscovite. It's flaky and iridescent. Another type of Mica, Biotite has the same glossy shine, but is pitch-black. Muscovite or Biotite are both found in Granite, which decides if the Granite has White or Black flecks in it.

...yeah, whenever my roommate sees me playing DF, he asks if I'm playing "Rocks the RPG" again.

I hate to be a grammar nazi* but the title of this thread has a glaring mistake. It's either "how something looks" or "what something looks like."
"How stones look like" is just plain wrong.

*I am, of course, lying. I love it.

I'm so used to internetese I filtered that right out...

Awesome thread is awesome. BTW, crystalline bismuth for cashes. You can also get pure bismuth from United Nuclear and then grow your own.

I have some regular bismuth...it's basically a dark grey metal. (The blue shine is my webcam's light.)

It powders really easily though, from being so soft, and the powder gets on everything it touches, making it feel rougher, yet not gritty. You can see some of the powder smeared on the bag at the top left.

Also interesting is that bismuth is the most diamagnetic metal, repelling magnets strongly enough to levitate neodyniums.

That's felsite. (the whitish parts, the black is something else). My current fort is sitting on a patch of land that's 95% felsite, so I'm rolling in the shit.

Also quartzite and Alunite.

Quartzite:

Alunite:

Hm....alunite looks like it would actually be awesome to build a tower out of. I'll have to look into making my keep out of it.

If only Alunite were so attractive in-game. I've repeatedly gone "WHOOP DE FUCKING DOO" upon the announcement of having struck Alunite.

Theirs really no such thing as Felsite, its a term that encompasses any light colored volcanic rock.  It could be a Rhylite or Dacite which are real rocks.  Felsite being in the game is basically an over site.

The black stuff on that picture is likely manganese dendrites.

Haha, very good. The filename includes Pyrolusite_dendritic_on_felsite, and checking wikipedia gives "Pyrolusite is a mineral consisting essentially of manganese dioxide (MnO2) and is important as an ore of manganese."

Applause.
