Well, sure, if you set it up so that your pump is underneath the well unlike the way I used to. You think you can just watch the pump-guy carefully to control the input, then forget once...  ::)

and if choosing projects counts as designing fortress, then that.

Wow, I guess I've been lucky, been pathing a bit around some 1/7 tiles of magma and managed to avoid getting burned. Oddly enough they pathed through the 1/7 magma just as I was setting up a water pump to clear out all the 1/7 magma.

The problem isn't that they'll walk through the magma normally, but if you ramp (and maybe stair, not sure) under magma, the dwarf will jump down into the new hole before the magma has had time to fall - or something like that.

I learned that lesson on a previous fort. Channeling down a magma tile is safe, digging up is not.

And I haven't lost any dwarves to standing magma yet, and I have a LOT of standing magma. I'm in year 5 now and the magma pipe hasn't topped out since the first autumn.

It's more that they prefer to ramp from the side, and dig it out, then walk into the square to mine the next one, only to ha'e it drop on them. I caught it a few times when obsidianifying an ocean, when cleaning up and extending the duct between magma cycles (and cutting away the new shelf so it'd build up on the floor)

This map has so many lethal possibilities - adding a competition to the mix, where players are (over-)focused on achieving goals and finishing projects quickly, distracts from those things that a vet would usually have covered without a second thought.

Oh, look! 6 beak dogs and 3 harpies are shredding two dwarves.  Glad my magma poured smoothly...  ::)

Fortunately I think I can safely drop the ever-burning imp fat into some magma - that'll clean up one practical joke waiting to happen.

I'm going to have to forfeit. I simply cannot deal with a double aquifer without using my own embark, not to mention the various real-life things piling up on me. Sorry. I do, however, hope to compete or judge later instances.

Good luck to all the remaining competitors!

I solved the magma problem by pumping in water after the magma after the magma had been pumped over the water.

the extra digging is worth not having !!!Dwarves!!!

Huzzah! Megaproject plan B appears to be working and I've found a yet better way of running my miners - more tips for the wiki soon.

5 years in, megaproject should be done at the end of year 106. Gobbos were kind enough to not siege me in the spring (send ambushes instead) so the elves were able to come and go. Lost a few more dwarves. Mining accidents, junk like that. 8 total casualties so far. TONS of injuries, though. I could fight off the next siege just with the ammo I've pulled out of the dwarves.

Which is why they call it "Masters".

(I keep tasking my veteran, starting dwarves based on the skills I expect them to have, as opposed to... well... yeah.  :P )

(I simply dug a large pit next to the vent, channeled down, tapped magma and poured water over that. Repeat.  Too easy, finished (just) before end of Spring.)

Wow. There's mountains of it down there.

I'd send you some of mine - I'm not using any of it.

Economy is standard DF, and (as with the last round) you do earn bonus points for the highest Civilization Tier/Noble Level you reach, so it IS actually a benefit.

Besides, Hindrance and Challenge are practically synonymous.

P.S. You've been on the list since this morning :P
