Newb questions!
« on: August 21, 2009, 02:11:53 am »

Adventure mode is awesome, though my first 2 adventurers died pretty quick (my macedwarf friend was choked to death by a cyclops, and I was then punched to death/I alone was choked by a minotaur).
I just have a few questions:
1) do you guys recommend any starting builds for me to have a good adventurer? The better one I've decided upon is Adept Axedwarf, Competent Shield + Competent Armor User.
2) is it really hard to play as a bowman, or is it just me?
3) so the T on the town map is the temple, and the M is the mead hall? Any other such symbols?
4) I understand the different colorations represent your field of view, but on the Travel map, what do they represent then?
5) how should I start to get money for more food etc.?
6) how do I get more people in my party? No one but the first maceman I met would join me.
7) what are the advantages of playing as human/elf/dwarf?
Thanks! :)
Also, I just learned that there's an adventurer's guide out there. Where do I find it?

1 Shield, Armor, a weapon. Most also recommend taking one skill point in Swimming, and maybe consider Wrestling.
2 Shoot, move away, shoot, move away. More difficult at lower levels, and hard versus some creatures. See the FAQ for details.
3 IIRC living areas are also marked with a letter.
4 Uh the color of the ground and vegetation, depending on season and time of day, I think.
5 If you start in an area where you had, and abandoned, a fortress or more, start out near where your fortress was. Travel from town to town; sometimes you'll see a caravan has arrived and spilled its now ownerless goods all over the place. Take everything, sell it in the shops.
If you don't, well, http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=40508.0
6 Keep levelling up. IIRC military types and Drunks (but not guards) will join you if you're more experienced than they are.
7 Elves and humans use large clothing, Dwarf size is normal. (slightly like MacDonald's where the "large" is the small size, and then you can order huge or extrahuge to get medium and large)
Apart from that ... I think I read that elf adventurers don't get attacked by wild animals

Expanding on 5 and 7:

You don't even need food or drink. [T]raveling removes all ailments, including hunger and thirst. Money really only helps with equipment, which if your skills are good enough, is largely redundant.

And for 7, Dwarves get a greater natural defense, but their clothing type is hard to find. Elves are not attacked by wildlife (anything animal-like, wolves, bears, etc. I also think that you can speak to animal-men, snailmen, slugmen, and such, with the Elves. They have the weakest starting build though. Humans are a good balance, and have the most quests available to them from the get-go.

Just keep 2 or 3 food for when you go exploring caves and abandoned forts.  And try too keep some water too. But otherwise it's unecessary.

In my experience, on food and money, when you start doing quests (I'd recommend being legendary in something before that, honestly, megabeasts and semi-megabeasts are nasty), the guys you go after often have food and crafts scattered around their caves. You'll end up selling a lot of it, just keep a few fisher berries or lizardman meat for yourself.

There are some dwarf kingdoms where you need to cross over the mountains to get there, so food and water is good for that, since you can't (T)ravel through mountain terrain.

Also: if you run into a megabeast while exploring a cave and you have substandard weapons, run like your life depends on it. Which it does.

Or just throw sand at it until it chokes.  If you run into a cave filled with GCS, just get the hell out unless you have adamantine armor+weapon.

No. You need at least [no adjective] Swimmer, so train that up as fast as you can.

See, a Novice Swimmer who is knocked/dodges/bull rushes into the water is done for. Falling into water sends them into panic mode, which sends them into drowning mode. A regular Swimmer is okay.

yes but it really doesnt take that long to train up that one level, so really your building your character from nothing.

Yeah, more than novice swimmer is just wasting points, since it's pretty easy to train.  Protip?  Make sure not to train swimming in cold areas.  Not that I've ever been frozen instantaneously...  ::)
