Very slow DF because Xorg uses 90% of CPU [ubuntu]
« on: September 02, 2009, 07:57:31 am »

Hi

I am able to run the native port of DF for linux, but it runs very slow. I checked the CPU usage, and about 90% was for Xorg, and 10% for DF itself. This is so imediately when I run the program, before playing when the menu screen is up.

Has anyone a clue to what is wrong?

If you post in the 40d# thread, Baughn can probably help you out with Linux issues.  Make sure to tell him exactly what version of DF you're using.

I am not sure this is DF problem. I had to reinstall new Ubuntu because of this. Xorg just went crazy after updating and it had nothing to do with DF.

what does Xorg do?

X.org is the windowing system, it handles graphics and application windows.

Maybe your graphics card drivers aren't working properly?

Run glxinfo|more and see what it says.

Near the top you should see:
direct rendering: Yes

except I'm guessing you'll actually see:
direct rendering: No

which means your CPU is doing all the heavy lifting instead of the GPU.

I'm running DF on Ubuntu and I'm not getting this behaviour. top reports that dwarffort.exe is taking up ~90% with Xorg at ~7%.

Are you running compiz? What are your settings in  System->Preferences->Appearance. You should try running a minimal graphics system there.

This topic should be closed. It was not a DF problem. I just hadn't installed the right drivers for my video card.

Good to hear it.  You can lock it yourself with the thread controls in the lower left.
