You can still change that you know? Less systems would mean you encounter your ennemies sooner, and that your computer don't die to FPS before you can own the galaxy. And you can make it bigger again once you have encountered the NPRs.

As for real starts, it means much less habitable planets and much less NPRs. Also having half of your systems called Luyten or Gliese is confusing as shit.

Huge amounts of data it has to process making the turns take so long to calculate the game seems to be standing still, maybe?

That's not as bad as fps death, happens to an extent in dominions 3 late games. What I usually do is take my time and read a novel in the meanwhile. Leisured gaming.
