hey guise!  haven't posted in here in ages... here's a sketch I'm working on.  Probably having too much cheesy fun to be healthy.   :D

ChairmanPoo - that is the biggest crayon drawing I have ever seen.  You can scale down raw scans by taking them into an image editor, scaling down the number of pixels and resaving.

It's a dwarf-like race. Their blood is more alcoholic than even pure alcohol, and immediately evaporates.

Lol.  Yes, that's actually the point of the illustration.  It's symbolic of birth, you see; the barbarian is feminism.

Today I learnt a little bit about the benefits of Corel Painter over GIMP ...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

However I find I can not seem to successfully colour something without bringing forward the lines from my 'sketch' to define the shape of the creature I am drawing. (they are but 'blobs' without the lines).

Maybe I'm too lazy to render properly and thoroughly (after all I quite like some of my line drawings!) ... need to work that one out ...

I had that problem with Painter endlessly, too, which is why I mostly use Photoshop now.  Painter has a lot of great soft-edged brushes, but most of the hard-edged brushes are really hard to control.  Maybe try the Sargent brush, some of the artist's oils, or the palette knives.  The scratchboard tool, under pens, is also pretty useable.

Thanks, I'll have a play with that. Finding some success with the scratchboard tool, initially.

Not too happy with how I am doing it at the minute, but I'll keep at it, post the results of my endeavours soon.

It is probably a question of practice, my background in drawing is largely based on biros and notepads, during phone calls at work ...

Completely unrelated, but I drew something else (my first go in photoshop) ...

Aside from that, it looks pretty good.  I like the shading style in it.

I'm actually trying to work out how you do it, cause mine isn't all that good and takes awhile.

Ok, here it is again. Resized to something reasonable

(the original pic was with the camera of a N95 phone, which tends to give large images. Of course, in the computer I dont realize it because it is resized)

Thanks for the comments, chaps.

Yeah, maybe the foot is wrong.

The shading style is quite simplistic, in this case I just used the default set of purply/blues from the Photoshop 'Swatches' (4 or 5 shades) and built up from the dark bits to the light bits, imagining the light source sitting to the ninja's left and slightly in front.

I have the darker outlines / shades and lighter details sat on a layer above the solid blues. I also add 'hatched' higlights / lowlights to this detail layer in a fine brush as I see fit to blend in the zones and try to make it so you can see the shapes that I am intending to show.

You end up with a messy, ineffective blob of shapeless blues on one layer (all drawn over a 'skeleton' of the form), which is refined with the detail layer sat over the top. All together they look a bit more effective. Then I just threw a background behind it all.

Don't know if that makes sense?

I'm going to go through some of the reference material from the first page of this thread, as I am on a personal quest to get to a stage where I can use colour / tone to define shapes rather than having to explicitly draw lines.

I don't have a scanner, so I can't really share any of my work, and my skills with the tablet are... bad. As in really, really bad. I thought I'd drop a few resources on you guys though.

I used to have more resources, but a lot of sites have died off during the years, and various re-installs and computer meltdowns have nuked my once impressive online library down to pretty much what you see here.
I've also got an extensive library of actual, real books to draw (hah..) from; time's running short right now but I can get back on that later if there's an interest.
