Many of D&D's coin physics problems are resolved nicely if GP are actually made of brass.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

So Deuze means, basically, Lambmover, and Stouri Sheears?

Well, specifically, the 3.5 PHB has a 1:1 scale image of a gold coin (page 168). We also know that 50 gp weighs 1 pound, so with that knowledge we can determine that the coin is very thin and floppy, using gold's real density and properties. If, however, the coins are made of brass, they can be thicker, and they aren't as soft a metal to begin with.
