A somewhat topical happy - after one semester of college organic chemistry I can mostly understand molecular structures based on systematic names. Mostly.

Played more roll to dodge IRL today and spent an hour and a half talking to a girl from my first hour. I think I made a new friend.

I tried to get into Neuromancer but found it too cheesy. Maybe he has some good ideas, but I thought his actual writing style was shit. Cyber implant weapons and stuff aren't really that intelligent conceptually either.

I much preferred White Light by Rudy Rucker, that's underrated, and Gibson is heavily overrated. He just can't write good prose.

Some say he was a pioneer, but Blade Runner came out 2 years before Neuromancer (or electric sheep back in the 1960's if you go for the book).

Starting some minor (non-medical) transitioning things and I'm feeling really good. Kinda scared, but good. Yay~!

Congrats, hope it all goes smoothly :D

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I bet nobody else wants to take a shot at naming the darned molecule I devised up above?

The best I can come up with is "Cyclotri-N-methamidol-NN-azo-N-azobenzene", which I don't think is accurate.
C6((N2N)2(CHOH))3 is the closest I can think of as far as a chemical formula is concerned.
I assumed as much, but you should generally note them anyway.
What exactly do you think the circle drawn inside the hexagon is all about :P
Edited in after he asked that I note it. :P

Not going to disagree with you on the prose. He's a bit like Tolkien in that respect: you have to slog through the writing of someone who isn't precisely a wizard with language to get to the good stuff. It's mostly interesting in the sense that it is the basis for some of the more interesting ideas in the genre, even if they've been done to death by now. Of course, in terms of personal interest I read it more because of the depictions of the geopolitical environment, the fall of the nation-state as the sole meaningful type of international actor, and so forth. The whole "net-diver" thing, though, is as attributable to him, and he presents a moderately different look at the implications of AI than Dick did.

That said, I'd concur on not bothering with his other work. It's not nearly as noteworthy and has the same issues. Read some of Dick's plethora of relevant works instead. Or read Vernor Vinge if you're looking for science fiction that is both modern (and thus free of some of the issues like the latent racism and sexism of much of Golden Age work) and original (aka not more mil-SF HFY space opera tripe full of strawmen in the vein of Weber and co.), and decently engaging to boot.

Can I stack these rotating avatars from signav? Like, link a bunch to another one to get more than three pics?

Except in the sense that you can only upload three at a time, as opposed to doing the whole batch at once.

You can have a rotator containing a link to a rotator, yes, but it won't help. I do it to adjust probabilities of things showing up in my avatar.

Eventually you get into a rythm of copy location, ctrl+tab, tab, ctrl+v, ctrl+shift+tab, copy location...

This week has been a get shit done week. I'm not sure how I did on my finals so far, but they are done, except for the last 2 tomorrow, and I've put my back into it, so to speak. I finally updated my games, vacuumed the carpet, cleaned the kitchen, etc. And, tomorrow, I get to go home to my family, hang out with my friends, and sit them all down in front of the TV together and make them watch a show.
