I hope you're not deterred from getting back out there- what do you ride, by the way?
Nah, I'm the rare type of person who always keeps everything in perspective. Not easily shaken or traumatized. It only took me about 10 minutes to get relaxed after the accident. And the only reason I was shaky at first was trying to anxiously get my thoughts in order as quickly as possible on doing everything right with police and insurance, in parallel with the interaction of holding the other driver liable without being an asshole. Once I got the first couple calls out of the way and established a reasonable tone of dialogue with the other guy, I was in good humor.
I was riding a 2004 Suzuki V-Strom. It's my dad's old bike that he gave to me, and I commute on every day, unless there's ice or snow.
Now that it's out of commission, at least for a while, he's letting me borrow this one that he doesn't use very often. He's quite the enthusiast. Has a few in his garage.
I'd be screwed without it, because the family car got totaled a couple months ago. We've been having a long fight with insurance, so we haven't got it replaced yet. In the meantime, we're down both our vehicles.
It's been a rough last 3 months. My workplace initiated a re-structure on May 1 and I was put in charge of a new team. I told everyone it was too soon, because proper cross-training and hand-offs of responsibilities weren't in place yet. I've ended up having to pull triple roles as a result, and my account coincidentally exploded with an unprecedented series of crisis through May and June as well. So I've been working like 70 hours a week to hold things together.
Then the first accident. Someone dropped their phone and ran a stop sign in front of my wife. They had the same insurance as us, so we've been dealing with a severe conflict of interest. We told insurance from day 1 that our car was totaled, but it took them 45 days to declare it. And then the valuations they've been trying to put on our car are pathetic. So it's been a hard fight with them.
We also hit the end of our rental agreement where we're living at the end of June. Between work being hell lately and having to borrow rides from friends and family for anyone but me to get anywhere, we haven't been able to house hunt.
But where we're living is too expensive for us. We initially went in on it with a roommate/wife's alternate relationship who's not working out, and we can't afford to sign on for another year. But it seems that in just the past year that we've lived here, rental rates in the area have spiked by about $200. So there's no options for us and we finally gave up and decided we have no choice but to buy a house. Mortgage payments are cheaper. Thankfully, our landlord hasn't kicked us out, and we just have to pay extra to go month to month until we get moved out.
In just the past week, we finally settled with insurance, and put in an offer on a house that was accepted. Not terribly pleased with either outcome, but they're ok and finally getting resolved at least. My employer is considering giving me my own completely independent role, and allowing me to work from home, which would be amazing. And the account has calmed down a bit this week. Hoping life returns to sanity soon. I'm starting to wear down pretty bad. And I'm not sure about my knee right now. It's become more bothersome as the day's gone on. But it'll all turn out ok.
