If one uses astronomer's definition, nearly everything is metal. But it's also nearly nothing.

Why do astronomers use that definition? What’s wrong with keeping metals metals, metal lids metsloids, non metals non metals. By the astronomers’ definition, the noble gases are metal too. I like the chemistry definition better, it makes the term more useful

Sorry for being cryptic. What I mean is that the chemical processes are nearly irrelevant to what astronomers are mainly concerned about - at least in the more traditional areas of study. So making distinctions between various chemical properties of elements that are extremely rare by fraction, and most often ionised anyway, would serve only to clutter the language. So in the parlance there's only hydrogen, helium, and 'the rest' - the rest being conventionally called metals for some historical reason or other.
The point being, it's good to remember that these are just definitions, context-specific and arbitrary.
