Question: is causing a child to be born thus unethical?
Dad here: The answer from my perspective is both yes and no. Why? There are a lot more states in the world than suffering. Is it unethical to deny the creation of knowledge, music, poetry, art, engineering, and euphoria?
D’you know for suresies the creation will experience those things?

This is not a discussion I ever hoped to witness.

Least of all in the happy thread.
The happy thread went from celebrating a goatllama's birthday to the mysteries of the Goat Tower to whether or not toasters should have the right to vote or something to the ethics of babies existing

Basically... Fool! The happy thread discusses as it pleases!

Joy is so fleeting;
suffering is eternal;

While existence involves suffering, it can also involve good experiences. Most people agree it’s bad to treat people like property. I don’t think creatures that can think should be treated as property. Don’t treat someone like crap just because their body might be different. Just because someone might not think exactly like you doesn’t mean they should be treated like less than you.
Many people seem to have not internalized this even today, *cough cough racism cough cough*

New Happy: an employee at the supermarket joked with me when I needed help with the perpetually-useless self-checkout.
When I'm out, alone and sober in public it is nice to be reminded that I still appear human enough to joke with. Dunno why but that cheered me up, especially given my frequent failures in the murky field of social interaction.

Nah, fuck those machines, and the dicks who put them in to get rid of employees and making customers do their jobs. Although the machines are nice enough to believe whatever you tell them you bought if you have the ID number.
Strenuously disagree. Less human interaction is almost always a good thing!
Plus, even in the old days before the machines came, one would often have to suffer through considerable queues to reach one of the human-operated checkouts. Sure, in a busy period one might need to wait a bit for a self-checkout, but it's hardly the same.

People are also entirely stupid and need to be handheld through the entire ordeal despite the instructions of how to operate the machine and/or fix whatever they’ve fucked up being displayed literally right in front of them, which requires another person to come along and quietly euthanize them correct their issue.

Also, people are stupid, so even if the person operating the self-service checkout isn’t entirely brain dead, the person who re-stocked the bags on them last may have forgotten to reset the scales, so it requires another person to come along and apologize for their colleague’s incompetence the machine being awkward.
