Why's the lightning taking a 90 degree turn? Shouldn't it be taking the shortest path to the ground?

Nope. Because the lightning doesn't know "the ground" is there. That's a non-local thing. From any point, the lightning follows the path of least resistance. So whichever direction it travels depends on the exact atmospheric conditions from its current point, and the air is constantly moving around so things are being mixed up. "shortest path to the ground" assumes that the level of charge and density of every point in the atmosphere is smoothly distributed, but that's constantly being messed up.

It's actually that Basque City is a mountain-side town, built 90 degrees to the ground. Everything there is lopsided as a result.

Yes I have. They are wonderful. He also had a scamalot series on Mashables, which contains some scam pranking that he didn’t do TED talks on too. Did you see the one where he talks to Alexa and Siri simultaneously?
