The word "coffee" entered the English language in 1582 via the Dutch koffie, borrowed from the Ottoman Turkish kahve, borrowed in turn from the Arabic قهوة qahwah. To clear up the confusion, Chinese uses 咖啡 (kafei, sounds like café) to mean coffee and just adds shop to the end for a place to drink coffee.
