Yeah. I've been waiting on this interview for over two years now.

That's what some of the folks trying to screw over poor people and sabotage government functionality use as their excuse, anyway. In reality most forms of welfare (well, for lower income people) have incident rates of that sort of abuse so low it costs more to stop it than the abuse costs.

Still, exactly how bad it is varies by state. Last I checked Florida, ferex, has both long waiting lists and a requirement of two years documented (i.e. doctor signed off i.e. bloody expensive) proof of disability before they even let you try.
