I mean, Thor was strong, but not necessarily the strongest in the pantheon. Odin, for instance. Or Freyr.

Even Loki, not necessarily as strong as Thor, could conceivably trick old age into letting him win.

No, Thor was pretty much the strongest guy around. That's pretty much the entire point of the story -- no matter how great a warrior you are, there's no point in fighting old age.

Which is kind of ironic given that the gods ate apples of immortality now that I think about it. Oh well, who needs consistency when when they have sensmorales.

Okay, I phrased my previous comment poorly. Yes, Thor was the strongest god in terms of pure physical strength.

But power doesn't come from strength alone. Loki, for instance, could conceivably trick a success where Thor would fail - as against the giant who stole Thor's hammer. Odin had command of far greater runic knowledge (or magic, whatever you wanna call it) and far surpassed Thor in raw authority and power.
