I just now found out about the Ryugyong Hotel.  Google it, it's worth a read if you're interested in seeing the problems of the future come alive today.

I had one of those moments where I was able to step back and see my relatively mundane job through the eyes of someone utterly uninitiated.

My job inolves mostly manipulating pieces of plastic in arcane, rapid configurations (often accompanied by the muttering of mysterious, unintelligble phrases), which cause almost imperceptible changes in the invisble flow of energy. These changes allow me to move objects at a great distance, see things as they occur thousands of miles away, communicate with far-off locations, even converse with unliving machines.

I'm a goddamn wizard.  :D

And I craft the very essence that brings life to the unliving. The very animus that forms their wretched souls and gives them the unnatural powers. MUAAAGHAHAAHAHHAAHAHAHHA!

Came across this nice little bit of life/brain-hacking which actually works, and has effectively given me more hours to the day, and allows me to still stay up late and wake up in the early morning (making me a morning owl or a night bird; provided I keep on it). I suggest starting it in stages though. Personally, I found the Everyman-3-nap the most efficient for my schedule (warming up with Siesta and E-2-nap the following day, and then E-3-n), and thanks to being able to wake up at ungodly hours full of energy, I've begun to actually appreciate what the morning birds make such a fuss about regarding being up early.

Now then, what to do with these 4 more hours-per-day added to my schedule (+28 freaking waking hours/week; this gave me another day's worth of waking hours I can use)). There's nothing really on TV or the radio at these times (except actual music and music videos), and not much else going on elsewhere, and it still looks like the dead of night. I've got a big list of productive things I can do, and not so productive things to do with this newfound time.

EDIT:
What caught me off-guard, especially, is how I'm actually starting to have a net gain of energy each day I keep at it (day 3 (first run of E-3-n), nearly jumped out of bed at 6-7AM (10-20 minutes to be fully awake; and having 18-hour days in my reach); I'm usually out until 9AM-11AM from my original sleep schedule waking up groggy, and needing an additional hour to be fully awake (so, I basically had a 14-hour day), and each other day, feeling less energetic. Coffee has become recreational again, and no longer a means of quick energy (usually needing 2 to get through the day).

I basically do the "Everyman 3-Nap". Minus the 3 naps. 4-5 hours of sleep a night, for weeks at a time. Usually with 1-2 days every few weeks where I sleep for like 14 hours. Guess you could call it the "Biweekly Hibernating Bear" method.

And yet none of them model our natural sleep pattern! (Everyman has the right number of sleep states, but its naturally supposed to be 2-3 hours, wake for 2 or so hours around midnight, 2 to 3 more hours, and then a nap around noon.)

Uberman is completely unsustainable for the human body, but decent if you really need to go with as little sleep as possible for a while for some reason.

I do wonder, though - how long have you been doing it, now?

I'm on day 3 of the process, starting from Siesta (and saw a decent gain from that), then E2n for the second day to see if I can ratchet it up a bit (started noticing a great change in how much more energetic I got), and it was a rather seamless transition, and today, I'm going through the E3n model, and I already feel it having an astounding effect on me (blazed through plenty of work without the 'morning' feeling), physiologically and psychologically. I'm still lazy, but at least I'm actively lazy, not lethargic and passively lazy (which results in being rather idle, and wanting to sleep more) like I've been for weeks.

I was actually feeling the urge to take a morning walk and watch the sunrise this morning. It's actually working quite well so far, and not often would I recommend something like this, but if you want more time to get stuff done, at least try it out (take your time to warm up to it). I mean, in some of the 20-minute nap sessions, and maybe a reason for some net-gain of energy, I have been out for longer than the recommended time; but despite that, I've been able to stick to the schedule, and been reducing my sleeping and nap times naturally as I follow the process (which I would take as a sign of it working well). The fact that the darkish rings under my eyes are actually disappearing is a really good sign that it's working, especially at times where it would normally be most visible.

I like to see this as setting your bedtime, and offsetting your naps by 6 hours. I miss a nap, I fall back to the previous stage and suffer minimal loss. And keeping track of when the times are is very simple, following that model. So let's say I sleep at 2AM; well, I can go the 8-2-8-2 model (8am nap, 2pm nap, 8pm nap, 2am sleep).

And thus was born a new avatar....or at least, would be if there was a decent picture of one out there. (i.e. not a fucking teddy bear with a wizard hat).

EDIT: However, I did find this (from exactly one year ago today, oddly enough), which amuses me. And I like the way the bear is drawn.

Don't think too highly of it just yet, then. If you're one of the people that don't take to it well, it could easily be another two weeks before you realize.

On the other hand, if you had issues scheduling yourself to sleep reliably before, this is probably just going to be an improvement.

Wish I had enough time in my day to go back to the natural 2 part sleep cycle I seem to fall into. Mmm....

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
