Bismuth!

This seemed like something the DF community would enjoy, thought I would share.

Ya know, I bought some of that stuff when I collected rocks as a kid. I had no idea it was bismuth.

Not to be the Ghost of Topics Past, but there is a fairly large topic that had pictures of all sorts of minerals and crystals, especially bismuth.

And still, they always look amazing, like some sort of crazy organic Aztec architecture.

I have a few bismuth slugs. They are awesome. I should try melting them sometime.
I've set up a magnetic levitation device with one of those.

Bismuth is magnetic?

Bismuth is diamagnetic. That is, it is repelled by all magnetic fields. This force is far less powerful than ferromagnetism; bismuth is the strongest natural diamagnet, and it's barely possible to lift a neodynium magnet the size of a grain of rice with two large bismuth ingots.

In fact, the only thing I recall that's more intensely diamagnetic is sheets of graphite... and then only at specific angles. And, as we all know, graphite nanoscale structures means Adamantine.

Diamagnetism isn't rare, though. Diamond and other forms of carbon, copper, and water are all diamagnetic. As such, practically all living things, when exposed to sufficient magnetic force, can be levitated in virtual zero-g.

Sure, but let's talk about "sufficient magnetic force".

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

Now I want to build a room out of graphite at those specific angles so I can levitate.

Yeh, diamagnetism is pretty sweet.

Literally everything exhibits some degree of diamagnetism. It's just that in para/ferromagnets it's drowned out by the paramagnetism. However, take the field high enough, and you will get a diamagnetic net susceptibility.
