In my experience, the employees spend at least as much time at the self-check machines as they do at the cashier-check, just because people cannot effectively interact with a self-checkout without fucking up either A) Something or B) Everything.

I should know, I've done it myself.

It's true. Faced with any scenario where they have to read and/or push a button, most customers will just call me over and point at the screen. The entire store was nearly brought to a halt one time when a simple yes/no question utterly baffled 90% of customers, who could not figure out how to read two sentences nor touch the screen.

You know, I think there's untapped potential here for truly automated, choiceless shopping. Just hide everything but the card swipe machines, charge them a random amount per swipe and dispense a sack filled with whatever merchandise is handy. If anyone asks, say it's all done with AI. That's almost all there needs to be, too. No bathroom; the bathroom doors will remain, but instead be the termini of a small labyrinth. There will also need to be an employees only door, but it will of course be freestanding.

Now, this will require some adjustment, but we can handle it by replacing the complaints departments with a row of mannequins that repeat whatever is said to them on a subsecond delay in a really mocking tone of voice.

My own sad: I've come down with something pyrogenic and it's apparently driven me utterly mad.

If anyone asks, say it's all done with AI.

"It's based on a complicated self-correcting choice algorithm."

Complicated self-correcting choice algorithm:

Code: [Select]
quantity <- random number less than 1000
items <- random selection of [quantity] items from stock

if [customer dissastisfied]
    choose new random seed
else do nothing

Approximately random number generation is a relatively sophisticated problem, so it's not untrue that the algorithm is complex!

I think he's implying the machines are assholes (or designed by them), so he's also right!

Yeah, CNN has really been showing off how terrible of a company they can be lately (I'll leave the timespan "lately" covers to the reader).

My last chemotherapy was several weeks ago... Or so I thought. Now an ultrasound of my liver shows that that's all fucked up too. They're going to stick a huge fuck-off needle inside me and take a piece of my liver to look at, then I have to drive several hours away to a gigantic city way outside my comfort zone to go see another specialist. For all I know, it'll be another years-long goose chase for them to figure out what it actually is. The most encouraging thing the local oncologist had to say is "Your case is getting really complicated."

I still need to get my teeth fixed. By the time I get the go-ahead from my six other doctors to do that, my X-rays will be out of date and I'll have to pay out of pocket to get those done again, too. The out-of-state trip I was planning is probably kibosh as well.

I feel like I'm cursed. I can't be happy with my family, with my education, with my job, and now even my own body is turning out to be a two-faced sack of shit.

sorry to hear that. What did they see in the liver exactly? if I may ask.

Nope. One of her friends was carrying her around at school and dropped her. Thankfully, the break isn't super severe, but it's still 3 weeks in a sling.

The PET scan shows a lot of unusual activity in the liver area, as well as a lymph node that's apparently still having problems right next to it.
