I should start exercising again. I slowed down during the Summer and stopped altogether when I began working again.

I tried doing some crunches the other day before going to bed. Could barely walk when I got up in the morning. Though my posture is shit and I have scoliosis, so it's not like my back was in good condition before attempting to exercise.

I really need to gain weight. Though it seems as though I'm losing my appetite, and getting even more sluggish. Might just be because I'm not on medication though.

While I don't regret making the mod, I think perhaps I was a bit naive as to what could go wrong with it.
Not to sound accusatory, but... yeah, it was a bit naive. Bay12 is a pretty good community as far as internet forums go, but once the less scrupulous players over on Reddit or the depths of 4chan get a hold of that mod, there's likely going to be more of same =/

Particularly in light of penguinofhonor's earlier sad post, this is starting to overflow into my rage-meter. Might be time to take an internet break.

Which do you think is preferable, excluding trans and intersex people from the game, or dealing with the inevitable problem that fucked up people will create from their existence in the game? (this isn't a rhetorical question.)

Dealing with it, definitely. Anything that gives people more options to enjoy the game and identify with is good, especially with a sandbox like DF. And the way you put the mod together reflects that - it looks really solid. Just need to be prepared for the fallout.

It's a complicated question. Racism/Nationalism/Religious discrimination aren't really implemented yet, but are likely to eventually be factors in randomly generated cultures (some being more tolerant, others less). It only follows that orientations and identities would follow a similar gradient of acceptance/repression across the various cultures of any given generated world.

I'd say inclusion is better, as people will do fucked up things with the game no matter what (mermaid bones anyone?). People's options shouldn't be limited just because of the few that abuse the choices they're given.

It means that OP in the link is being "edgy" i.e, doing controversial things for attention because they have a juvenile conception of what makes somebody "badass". You know, like teenagers who talk about how they wish their parents were dead and such.

man I have a habit of accusing people of doing that, but.. this is so specific and fucked up. How could he have thought this would ever be perceived as edgy or make him cool and controversial.

This is the kind of thing that quite possibly, in the future, could escalate to him doing it in real life. He was very eager to see me complete this mod, it was in his mind the whole time. (Which I did not know at all.)

That thought is so deranged, and so dangerous, I don't know...

No such thing as bad publicity. And you'd be surprised what thought processes people, especially teenagers (don't know Gnorm's age, but...) can end up employing.

Methinks you're giving a little too much legitimacy. Most people have thoughts about things they would never really do. When you have a virtual context in which to do things, sometimes those thoughts get some exercise. Same thing happens when people act or role-play.

But this is even less legit than that, I think he's just looking for a rise. Honestly, real threats are more likely to not do stuff like this, because they'd be paranoid about exposing themselves.

Remember, the kind of logic that "if they do it in the game then they do it IN REAL LIFE" is the moral guardian creed. It couldn't possibly work, society would have collapsed after Doom was released.

I can not unsee what I have seen. I thought this would be vaguely disturbing or something, akin to mermaid farming. But no, that's just 100 levels too far.

hey now, in Doom you killed Nazis. I thought that was an agreeably acceptable thing to do.

I have just seen how these 4chan type people behave around each other and how they can feed off each other until it escalates into something real.

No, in Doom you killed demons and undead soldiers. Wolfenstein was the Nazi-shooter.

Indeed.

I'm not saying it's impossible (god knows the threat of the mob mentality is real), but there's nothing particularly more dangerous about this than meatspace edgyness. In fact, I'd say it's probably less, since once you log off you have to consider meatspace separately from cyberspace.

As for 4chan, all I'll say is that it's the human condition, unfiltered. Results may vary.
