Which thing are you cursing at? There are so very many.
Australian News. Hostage situation ends with 3 dead including the gunmen.

So how many were there? The article only mentioned one guy IIRC.
From what I've heard on the new there was only 1 gunmen and 17 hostages to start with a few escaped yesterday and more this morning after he was believed to have drifted off to sleep, shortly after awaking the gunmen opened fight on the remaining. Then the Swat moved in and killed him before he could kill all the hostages.

Why. Why does this stuff happen. Why do people do these kinds of things.

Because people are [cannot think of a bad enough word for this]s, I guess. The question remains, however, about why people are such [cannot think of a bad enough word for this]s.
Religion is the word you're looking for. Religion mixed with cruelty and stupidity.

1 gunman, two of the hostages died. Obviously, investigation pending. There were 17 hostages total.

People are religions? Huh. Now I have a mental image of a group of people shouting each shouting some variation of "Don't you see? I AM [religion]!".
But yeah, while that's not the only cause, it certainly can escalate tense situations and make people do dumb shit some of the time. :/

Religion isn't necessarily the cause (though an awful lot of the time it can be) but it most certainly is the justification, unfortunately :/

see my link, christians are just as bad, threatening muslims for one dude's attacks. I'm happy that so many australians are showing solidarity with the muslims in the area though. Thinking with your heart instead of with visceral, kneejerk reactions is so much more pleasant.

Assholes use Religion as justification, Religion dosen't magically make people assholes. If you start correlating the two you're just as bad as the "games make you violent" crowd.

Pretty much what I meant, I just suck at explaining myself.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that people in some situations will form an 'in' group and an 'out' group, and from there do stupid shit like killing each other. Religion is just one way people will choose to select these groups.

You have to admit though, a certain amount of religious fervour can make people do bad stuff. As someone said (can't remember who) "For good people to do bad things, it takes religion."

Actually the part I was hiding from was the "6 people dead in 3 locations" serial shooter in Pennsylvania.

Call it work-induced PTSD, I just don't handle mass shooting incidents well anymore.

I would like to throw in that with large religions that hold something like a third of earths population under their denomination, crazy people will use it as an excuse for what they do along with the true religious radicals (who are still crazy sometimes)

Harris states that religious "core beliefs" are "mad" though, in general terms. To an outsider, even if it is only one person of a faith looking into another's, it all looks a tad bonkers, e.g. glossolalia

I'd still argue it's the person, not the institution, that's broken. I mean, when you get to cult level brainwashing that's different, but I would argue that the core tennants of the majore world relgions today do not lend to extremeism.
