I really know to little to give advice, but there's a German saying which roughly translates as 'Better a horrifying end than an endless horror.' Work it out if you can; but if that's not possible, don't drag it out longer than necessary.

Yeah. I'm not getting it back. I dropped it on the sidewalk at the side of a road, but didn't realise it at the time, and coming back to the spot it was gone.

I've been playing Plague Inc too much. My first thought was "spread" as in "spread between people". Cancer, the worst plague.
