I'd like to know about trades, only because Toady doesn't talk about it much and there are a lot of questions I've been wondering.

Does he plan to require a carbon source for smelting independent of the heat source? (carbon's necessary for the smelting reaction, it's all on wikipedia)
Just what the heck is "crystal glass" anyway? Best I can figure it's just really high-purity glass because it's made from rock crystals.

You know, stuff like that.

World generation and that stuff is great, and probably more interesting from an objective standpoint, but it seems to get talked about more. On IRC, at least, the questions people have tend to be more about the industries and such in the game.

There is already a carbon source, charcoal or bitmunous coal and lignite.

Hence "independent of the heat source" -- no carbon source is needed for most ores at the magma smelter.

You still need it for steel making though.

Yes, but if you're nice enough to assume G-Flex isn't a total idiot, it's apparent that he was talking about general smelting and not the two exceptions.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply that he was a total idiot. I could have misunderstood what he was getting at.

Edit: It may also have been because I was reading really fast and didn't really think into what he was saying.

The reason you need it for steelmaking is because the carbon there represents not the carbon needed to reduce a metal from its compounds, but rather the carbon you're actually adding to the alloy.

Probably overexplaining, but just in case, there are effectively three things you would use carbon for at a smelter:
  • Producing heat to actually melt things.
  • Reacting the carbon with the oxygen in the ore in order to drive elemental metals out.
  • Actually adding carbon to an alloy such as steel.

DF seems to represent 1 and 3, but not 2. Most people don't even really know about 2, so I feel the need to mention it sometimes. The concept is pretty intimately related to the fact that we can't smelt aluminum from bauxite in DF.

As for Bauxite, I heard that the proccess requires electricity. I checked the wiki and it does. The dwarves could do most of the steps using pressure containers and maybe a chemistry lab to make the acids needed, even cryolite (which is used as a flux) is present in the game, but electricty is beyond the tech level of DF.

There are some complex chemical steps they probably couldn't do as well. I'm not sure which you're referring to, though.

It would be really nice if you could build a tall iron tower connected via iron walls to your vat of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite, then wait for a thunderstorm.
