Custom item type?
« on: July 08, 2010, 12:19:36 am »

Is it possible to make a custom item type? I want to add wires to the game as a product, and i'd like to have something to the effect of ITEM_WIRE. Do i have to use a fake category (like toys)?

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

You need to use a preexisting item type, sorry.  So yes, ITEM_TOY is your best bet.

Using thread would be amusing though. You'd get dorfs sewing each other up with wires.

"Ow! Ow! that thread sure hurts! what's it made of?"

"Oh, just some iron"

"Oh my --" *passes out*

Someone already beat you to it, take a look at the topic "Prototype: Metal Fiber Extruder".

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Oh right, I meant to mention that here. :). I saw you wanting something like that so I figured I'd go ahead and throw up what I had laying around.
