Don't Break The River.
« on: October 22, 2009, 11:28:24 pm »

An important word of advice: Don't create obsidian at the EDGE of the map when damming a river with magma. The results are sad. Very, very sad. :(

You can't mine out the very edge of the map, so if you accidentally dam it with magma, your river stops flowing and there's nothing you can do about it.

I ran into a beauty of a river in my latest fort.  Upstream was cold enough to freeze, downstream wasn't.  First winter, half of the thing flashes, most of the carp die, the rest flop around as it empties out.  Now, no carp and if I ever need to dam it for any reason, I can just do it during winter.

Actually, there's something you could try, namely, smoothing the obsidian and carving it into fortifications. You just might set the river free again.

The tweak utility from the wiki is very handy in these situations.. ;)

Alas, I had planned on this, but it failed. Five years' worth of expectant river sculpting down the chasm-drain.
