Should game contain pregenerated world?
« on: November 03, 2009, 03:40:21 am »

idle thought:

One of first hoops that budding DF player has to jump through is generating world.

It takes time and can get annoying if you have no idea what is going on. It is like five minute loading screen, and people, well, hate loading screens.

Not only would prepackaged world reduce this wait to zero, it also offers chance to finetune new player experience. From less random civilization names to having fluff "hand-drawn" fantasy map with interesting features (i.e. embark spots) pointed out.

Since every new player would be able to embark to exact same spot, it would greatly simplify tutorial effort as tutorial make would know exactly what is on map of his choice and be able to tailor tutorial to be smooth on it.

I reckon we'd do well to start with a small "tutorial world", the sole purpose of which is to familiarize people with the game. I wouldn't want it to go beyond that, though.

Oh? Help the newbies? Let's just pop in the Barney tape, give them their sippy cups, and PAD EVERYTHING WITH FOAM.

Dwarf Fortress hates us because it loves us, and all the difficulties only make the game that more sweet. Especially at noob levels.

Why increase the download size so much?

Just cherry pick a small world seed that actually generates something good and include it as a menu option.

I hate big downloads.

The download issue is a good point, but honestly, at the distance in the future we're talking about, it's unlikely to be a significant issue. If it is, in fact, a significant issue, no reason two downloads can't be available.

There are pregenerated worlds, if somebody get bored of generating them by self.

It seems like it would be better if the tutorial makers included pregenned worlds with their tutorials.

Ah yes, of course, this definitely sounds better.

Didn't Toady used to keep a pregenerated standard world on the same page as the download just in case?

He still does, they are one link deep from the DF page.

I doubt they still work as expected though.

Some kind of non-procedurally created world with fewer civilizations ( and with real names perhaps, not just "Nouverber the verb of verbing"), clearly distinguished biomes and a built-in tutorial could be a good start yeah.

About the download size... the file is like 5.5 mb now. Apart if you're still on a dialup connection, that's a pretty small download, even if its size were to be doubled.

I have two copies of one world saved and my DF folder is 30 mb.

My DF16 folder weights about 1.2Gb. And what's that? ;-)

I think a default world would be OK, but I don't think a  tutorial with blinking menus and text boxs would work while or be easily programmed in the game.
