The tree-huggenest fort ever
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:22:48 pm »

It may not be dwarfy, but I like having a nice dense forest leading up to my fortress.  It lets me make effective use of cage traps, without just blanketing them everywhere.

With this in mind I've started setting spots where trees grow near my fort as restricted movement zones until the trees mature.  This, and I buy all my wood.  I only really use it for clear glass, and some new furniture every now and then.

Trees are immune to magma (at the time of this writing) so they have to be at least a little dwarfy.

It's the elves that's the problem...

Cage Traps are fun for elves.
Also, use the Magmachamber, a room in a corridor of your fort especially for the treehugging pests honoured guests (EG. Elves) A tripwire of Pressure plates strung across the hallway connected to a room a few tiles up the hall that locks on both sides with magma-safe floodgates. A third floodgate on the next Z-level connected to a self-filling magma reservoir will then open, filling the locked room + enclosed elf with Fun. Alternately, remove the Fun and just have the offending elf starve to death/go insane. Longer death or insta-fatality by magma?

It's like I say about stuff like Anime, Punk Rock, and WoW. It's not the items fault, it's the peoples fault that make it look lame.
