I just did a brief test with Flarechannel in both 40d ([PARTIAL_PRINT:NO:2]) and 40d17 (all print modes except for 2D, [SINGLE_BUFFER:NO]).

In 40d, framerate was 3-4 unpaused and 20-24 paused.
In 40d17, framerate was 1-2 unpaused and 5-7 paused.

Granted, this is on a system with an older CPU/GPU (3GHz Pentium D, 256MB Radeon X1300/X1550 series) and likely outdated drivers - I should be able to get more reasonable benchmarks on my main system (2.4GHz Core 2 Quad, 512MB Geforce 8800GT) in a few hours.

If it is still noticeably slower, then I hope that the upcoming "Dwarf Fortress 2010" will still have the option of using the original graphics code - even as inefficient as it may be, some systems actually perform better with it than with what's in 40d#.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Greiger: The old one was 10x12 and the default, 800x600 stretched to 10x24. 40d16 uses a version that's pre-doubled to 10x24.

So, use the old 800x600 font with your coordinate setting- I see it's a perfect multiple.

And so does 40d17, I'm guessing, as I see some people have called it an error mistakenly. Crossposting so people who want their 10x12 back get it.

d17 slower than d16 by somewhat 30%. (130 vs 180 fps).
First days from embark.

Same settings in ini. Changing to 2D and other modes doesn't make a significant difference.

Use backspace.  You couldn't guess that on your own?!  ... yeah, the keybinding screen is extremely rough right now.

Oh, that's weird.  What OS are you using?  Any non-US keyboard configuration?

Oh, and worldpainter does not permit click-drag, 9 embark problems makes for an empty embark problem screen on page two.

Mouse designations appear to work ok.

(V)isualize does not break the screen like it used to in d16, but it now does nothing. makes the FPS counter think things are still running though they're not if it's unpaused.

edit: Mouse support is pretty meh now, clicks do not always register. d16/40d were nice in this regard.
Key repeats are jerky rather than smooth.

I'm kind of sad that the macros don't record mouse input but I can understand why.

As for bugs I can't figure out what triggers the stick at ending game.
It's only happened the once for me so far.

Without having altered any of the init settings I dug out the basic entryway (mine is fairly elaborate compared to what a lot of people do,) and designated my workshop area. I had a few stockpiles near the entrance to keep my carpenter and such busy until they had more important things to do and a meeting zone. I'd recorded maybe a dozen screw up macros (that didn't actually end up making my spiral ramp to the bottom take less effort but now I'm used to it.)

Also I saved an embark profile but that hasn't been an issue in the second fort (seeing as the first didn't save.)

As for fps right off the bat I get about 170 but it drops to 20 for about 5 seconds roughly every 20 seconds.
Strangely it seems to go 30-40 fps faster than the max I set in init while it's paused- or did the game always do that?

Edit: Vista 32bit.

Ok I've performed a few FPS tests comparing them from d16 to d17 of the PC version via emulator. (I use a mac so... yeah... don't exactly ask me why, I had problems with the mac version of d16 due to....hiccups)

In the older version of one of my files I was able to run the game at a steady 60-65 FPS under Partial:2 running on High Performance.

Here I attempted the same thing, but it caused the frames to be cut drasticly, by half. About 30 FPS.

After testing a few other modes I have to say this.... 2D mode reduces it to a crawl. 10-15 FPS, same for 2DASYNC and 2DHW though those I think may of have slight improvment. (also I don't know why, I thought it was going to have an "actual 2D mode" like old school DF. Not some graphic variation)

Standard ran at 40-50 FPS

But then, this one caught me my surprise...

ACCUM_BUFFER and FRAME BUFFER had the best results.
Shooting the FPS up to 70-80 FPS.

Don't know why it did that, but it I'm pleased with that. Course maybe I should try that with d16 and see if the same thing happens...(Edit: Tested it, results were worse in d16 thus now d17 is better in my book. At least the PC version)

VBO I'm not going to talk about cause it was identical to 2D mode....

I should sit down and see if I can make magic work with the mac version once it's released. And if I'm successful I will probably be pleased with the FPS at the moment.

d16 - 16 fps
d17 - 13 fps

DFG2.1 + d17 + some small mods, affinity set to 1 cpu, 1.6 ghz c2d, toshiba a200 with x3100 and 2 gb of ram, windowed, 1280x1024, zoom 1.0.

fort with 207 dwarves and 229 animals.
it is interesting, that d17 gives feeling as it is faster(scrolling, etc) while fps are not.
need to try some fun with init...

anyway, i just wanted to say thanks!

upd:
correction:
d16 - 10 fps
d17 - 13 fps.

also is it normal for the menus to only take up a third of the screen even with character stretch on in 40d17
