So I might be moving to Australia, any pros/cons?
« on: November 16, 2009, 05:36:32 pm »

So my family just told me that we might be moving to Australia in the near future. Well to begin are there any pros/cons of living there? How are the people? the culture?

Pros: The sheep are nice...
Cons: Up until they and every other animal on that forsaken alien bare their fangs and shoot venomous lightning at you.

If the resident forum Australians are an indicator of the general behavior of Australians, prepare to have the "Australian Fauna Will Kill You" meme shoved into your head.

That's just a stupid meme, I doubt anyone will ever say that to you IRL (just watch the redbacks !). Cons are the hole in the ozone, we have (one of ?) the highest skin cancer rate in the world. Pros are the nice sunny weather and beaches! (usually, not so much where I am in Melbourne.) It's also a big, sparsely populated country outside the cities, if you like driving/solitude/mateship.

I thought the skin cancer rate was because you had a lot of white people spending too much time in the sun.

I am probably going to be living in a large city such as Melbourne or Sydney. What about high school in Australia, any drugs or bad things going on?

There is the occasional crime war that goes on.

Pros: Sun, sand, surf, sheep.
Cons: No R18 rating for games. So except some games not to make it to your shores, and some (like GTA4 and & L4D2) to be censored.

As for the ozone hole, just be glad your not moving to New Zealand. We have it even worse.

Downside:

Drop Bears

They are a serious problem in Australia. Generally speaking be careful around trees.

heh, that too.

Yeah there'll be some drugs in schools, just like anywhere, but there's geekier groups too to hang with. I think you'll find the place pretty similar to the states, though I wouldn't know from experience. The multiculturalism will be a bit different, I expect it's greater here than in most places, particularly in Melbourne. European descendants are just another minority in melb.

So Code Zero how many tourists have been disfigured by Drop Bear attacks lately?

Downside:

Vegemite!

It is an aquired taste. Until you aquire it, it tastes like Yeast Extract

Only some Swedish tourists, when I accidentally fell out of the tree, it was a drop bear, i swear.

Hey Dfnewb, why are you planning on moving to Aus anyway?

Well my parents just said that one day they want to move to Australia and how they have been thinking about it for a while. I am not sure if we are or not for it is not certain, but it's most likely that we are.

EDIT: WAIT WHAT!?!?!
Falling bears?

Drop Bears are bears that generally speaking drop out trees and attack those they land on or near. Hense the name.

Australians usually have enough sense to avoid them but Tourists tend to be killed or maimed by them with some consistancy. They warn the tourists mind you.

It's a joke, mind you. Just remember to wear a pointed hat or hold a screwdriver above ones head. If you forget, it is no longer a joke, as the bear will brutally maul you.

First tip?

Learn to surf if you live near a beach.

If not learn to swim.

If not get ready for heat heat heat rain heat heat rain rain heat rain HEAT RAIN RAIN heat.

In that order.

If you move to Sydney watch our for funnel web spiders., even in the suburbia. If you move to Melbourne.

I 'unno.
