Obviously you've never tried to "just dam a river with floodgates".

I had magma and a river.

I obsidianized a dam in the river, and then diverted the river through my fort (2 z-levels down) and lined the new river area with cage traps. Capture carp, re-dam river, reload traps, build /fill pit, fill with carp aquaria, flood, release carp, Fun.

Bah, pansy. I dammed a major river (~30-40 tiles IIRC) without magma or freezing.

Well, if we're going to 1-up eachother, I've dammed a 5x5(Embark squares) part of the ocean, using only a single embark square of land for my dwarves to base themselves off.

And there was a big magma pipe on that bit.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

I did something similar to the OP, except instead of a puppy mill that trains wardogs... mine were being used for quivers, since the marksdwarves needed SOME PLACE to keep their bolts. >_<
