It's easy to make a few silly mistakes without realizing because you get stuck with the problem as a whole. Wait till you get to college calculus. It's important to write out the basics so you don't forget or skip an important but minor step. It can turn simple problems difficult if you assume your basic math is perfect when it is riddle with human errors occasionally.
This is why I took calculus online.

And abused Mathematica in the process.

Oh man, I know how you guys feel. This one time I accidently forgot to put my work on a paper and the teacher got mad at me and said that my awnsers dont count if I dont write down work so I was so bummed.

I am also terribly messy. That get's you docked majorly. Anyways, Yeah I only use Wolfram after I figure it out because I enjoy math. It's my way of checking when not using an online homework program.

2 sin x = 1, [0, 2pi]
That can't be right... sin x != 1/2 at 0 and 2pi because sin x = 0 at 0 and 2pi it would two values y and z such that 0 < y < pi/2 < z <pi

Also this thread make me glad all my calc tests are electronic. Just put in the right answer and you get the marks.

But we get copious amounts of partial credit. However, the problems are pretty damn difficult if they want to make them, to set the curve.

I believe the idea was to solve it on the interval [0,2pi] so you don't have to write the 2kpi stuff.

Don't feel too bad - I also did at first.

Getting this somewhat back on topic...

This last quarter I used an online homework system for the college algebra class I was teaching.  It was obviously more convenient for me, but having just graded finals, I get the feeling that there wasn't much understanding going on while they were doing the homework.

The computer doesn't help you. All my calculus homework is done online (Many of the more complex problems are a pain in the ass to answer). On a polar problem involving taking the outside area of a circle at the origin with a set radius and the inside area of a non-origin circle, me and friend eventually discovered that while, I would get the right answer due to the insignificance of it, there was a small amount of area not calculated unless one does a ton of extra work because the way the area is taken for the polar involves angles with straight lines leaving a portion of a curve outside of the outside area measurement. He would get the wrong answer in his because the number became significant enough to count. Yeah, We were pretty pissed at the Professor not mentioning this to us.

Some of those online homework gizmos are really easy to game. My favorite was the one used for my calculus class--it would auto-simplify an equation for you,

Of course, to game sometimes requires actually understanding the mathematics behind it so it's not that big a deal, but when you can answer the problem "if f(x) == sin(x) * log(2x) + sqrt(x), find f'(x)" by entering "d/dx * [sin(x)log(2x)+sqrt(x)]", there be a problem. :)

Ahhh online calc quizzes are funny. You see, the software used for our quizzes used maple code, so all you had to do was copy-paste your question into the Maple program for an instant solution. The temptation to do this was too great for most of my class mates. Every single person who did that though, failed the unit, because they couldn't do the exam:D

Well, to get back on topic, plagiarism is pretty serious, but I always worry that I'm going to plagiarize something accidentally. Like I'll plagiarize something I've never even read before, and those programs that are used will think that I did.

It amuses me how some people consider getting away with not learning a good thing.

I totally agree.  This sort of happened in one of my high school English classes.  The teacher had us submit one of our papers through it, and we all got high "plagiarism scores," indicating that we stole stuff.  She was quite upset, until she realized that what it was accusing us of "plagiarizing" were quotes from the book.
