A question of Savagery and Evil
« on: December 03, 2009, 08:00:32 pm »

Just a quick question for all the adventurers out there.

If I wandered an evil or savage place for awhile and fought many creatures, would the evil or savagry in the area change?

No, as every wolf you slay simply increases the skeletal wolf army of DOOM.

And nameless creatures just respawn anyway.

Actually each biome does have a certain number of creatures assigned to it. In theory if you killed enough you could deplete the biome (this happens to fortresses all the time).

You can't change Savagery and Evil though; biomes are decided before creatures. (So the game assigns this biome an 'evil' type, and then populates it with evil creatures.)

Once, a long time ago, I had an adventurer I trained up on some harpies. I then looked into the world info dump thing and discovered that the hundred-some harpies I had killed left somewhere around twenty in the biome alive. Encounters did actually become less frequent.

Then I got killed by a wolf. Frickin' criticals.

I wandered the woods for nearly a dwarven year, training my adventurer, and depleted a biome of what seemed to be all hostile wildlife for the whole next year. Or at least that is what it seemed like, due to that I had to travel to other nearby biomes to find wolves or cougars.

From that, I do believe it is entirely possible to "clean out" a biome, but it is not possible to alter the biome's "alignment", through any method known to me. Wildlife will repopulate if a biome is cleaned, though I am not sure if this is due to the few survivors, spontanneous generation, or migration.

i seem to remember a very old forum post from Toady suggesting that you could change the alignment of a place, though it would take a very long time to make even a slight change.  it was probably on the old forums, and i dont know if this is still true in the current version.

odds are not, as i think worldgen changed pretty drastically since then.

It is certainly not in now, but I think there are some devnotes about adding it. Along with changing the savagery/good/neutral/evil system into something more dynamic. Not certain what it was, possibly certain areas would be linked to spheres rather then alingement but im not certain about it.

easiest way to change things for the negitave would be to "drill for oil" every mountain tile or so in fort mode.

1k years of darkness per fort.

you would probably enter a new era after doing that a few times.  i've heard of people bringing in new eras by letting that loose on pocket worlds.
