We could build it out of ice.

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.

Yeah it's very interesting.
And as Dame says we're quite a few years overdue, we have no way of hindering it and it would probably end 80%+ of all life.

No, really, it's fascinating!

Not at all likely. It will kill 100% of life in the immediate vicinity, and put most/all of North America into a world of hurt. IIRC, its last eruption had little effect on most the megafauna of North America (they waited around to be exterminated by humans moving in thousands of years later). The rest of the world with have a few years of hardship, but will recover.

Actually though, yellowstone has been rising at an expanding pace, the last few decades have seen an expansion larger than the the last few centuries. This same effect has been observed immediately prior to erruptions of smaller volcanoes. We just don't know how long its going to take; but its coming, maybe years, maybe centuries, maybe a millenia.

I vote for millennia.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Same. As cool as it would be telling grandkids about the big eruption, I wouldn't want to have to deal with the repercussions.

I do vote for calderas to be in DF though. Those would be some crazy worldgens

The entire earth has been struck down!

I just solved the crushing budget deficit. Supervolcano = most/all of our debts nullified, plus financial aid for decades.

plus it'll probably destroy Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Win/Win!

Y'know, that might just be the best economic recovery plan ever! Now think of one for Britain...

With any luck the "volcanic winter" will be long and cold enough for Britian to be covered with glaciers? Its a long shot, but its happened at least once before.

Now we must wonder, when we finally get volcano eruptions into Dwarf Fortress, will they affect the whole world if the eruption is from a supervolcano? Or at least, a large part of the world.

That, and how it would effect wildlife, and civilizations. Humans and elves are easily in danger, dwarves and goblins prefer mountains(although of the two, dwarves have the better shot since they prefer underground) and kobolds live in caves. Assuming they're not immediately buried in magma and suffer fatal cases of volcanic ash inhalation, what are the chances of underground races surviving the incident?

Dwarves have their domestic animals and underground plants, and can simply mine for watersources. But what do kobolds have? Dumb luck?

WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE KOBOLDS

Kobolds steal stuff, they've got no problem. They'll nick food from other peoples, maybe even develop a culture based around the brave ash wanderers that go out and retrieve essential things for the mother land.

...yeah, probably. I'd go a bit more Fallout, though.
