Dwarf Fortress Font?
« on: December 17, 2009, 08:27:09 pm »

Can someone tell me what font is used in Dwarf Fortress? And, on a related note, how I can install that font for use with NetHack? I used to play NetHack on the PC, and it’s not the same without the old font!

Thanks!

Andy.

To my knowledge, DF doesn't use a font.  It uses an image file and takes sprites from that file.  I could be wrong, though.

The closest you can get to it is fixedsys.

Yes, it does indeed use an image file, called the tileset.

For anyone who runs across this thread and wonders the same thing, the font is DOS code page 437. Tarn mentions this in one of the podcast interviews he did.

You can find various TTF versions floating around the web.

If you want a tileset that matches the traditional 9x16 "MS-DOS fullscreen" font, try this.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Not to necrobump, however if anyone else is looking for these fonts, but desires a .ttf version, http://int10h.org/oldschool-pc-fonts/ has not only the original font, but some newer expanded versions with unicode support. Free to boot.
