Belts [power, not conveyor]
Forumsdwarf:
"Belts" would be leather or cloth axles with these differences from wood axles:
code:1. Belts cannot act as supports for adjacent equipment.
2. Belts can be run across open space so long as the termini are accessible.
3. Belts will stack with anything else in a room except upward ramps and upward or up/down stairs.
3a. I may not have thought this through; waterfalls are probably as impractical across belt runs as wagons on ramps.
4. Belts can run perpendicular across axles without either interfering with the other.
4a. Belts and axles would communicate power where a belt terminates perpendicular to an axle (i.e. the belt is wrapped around the axle).
5. Belts wear out.Looking at pictures of steam-powered factories I noticed a close relationship between axles and belts.
Karlito:
Is there an advantage to using them?
Forumsdwarf:
Crossing open space.
Having buildings / furniture / etc. in the same space as belts. (In "real" factories belts run along the ceiling.)
Doesn't use wood.[ January 22, 2008: Message edited by: Forumsdwarf ]

Tying two axles together.W = Gear Assembly directly below windmill
= = Belt
| = Axle
+ = Axle & Belt
* = some other Gear Assembly
o = Floorcode:Wooo*

+===+
|ooo|
*ooo*Of course, this example is only useful for reducing the ammount of assemblies needed.[ January 22, 2008: Message edited by: Untelligent ]

Note that you could actually use a continuous belt for linking the various things together to work at the same rate as eachother. For an example of this look at the belts on a car engine. Also chains would work for this too.
