Ladders
« on: March 24, 2008, 11:01:00 am »

I'm sure this has been suggested before but could we get ladders in the game?  I'd love to not have to build an up/down stair to get to places that are on a different Z level.  In addition it would be much easier to move and reuse a ladder. I would also like to see ladders be placeable on tiles that are labeled as constructions and for them to be placeable from a higher to lower Z level or a lower to higher Z level (from Higher to Lower a Dwarf could simply lower the ladder).

I second this but in a slightly different way, instead of ladder call the device Scaffolding and have them stackable. Once stacked only the highest one can be deconstructed. They can be placed just like any other furniture and let dwarve move on them like up/down stairs... It would really ease up the construction of large structure and it is a pretty realistic way to do it...

Anyway just simple ladders like you proposed would already be a huge help.

I'd like to have ladders just so I could allow my dwarves to climb DOWN from a platform. To be fair, goblins and kobolds should be given access to the technology so they have a greater chance of getting over walls.

Yeah, it would be good to put in whenever siege AI gets updated.  Of course we'll just build the walls 2-high, but still  ;)

Coming to the dwarven marketplace near you: Siege ladders, 2,3 or even 4 z-level tall.

I'd like ladders, for but one purpose: animals would be unable to use them.  Anything which would be typically unsafe for animals to be wandering through, but which would be okay for dwarves to walk through, could use a ladder.

A creature would need at least:
1) Two GRASP body parts and one STANCE body part, OR
2) One GRASP body part and two STANCE body parts, OR
3) Three GRASP body parts, OR
4) INNATECLIMB, which will presumably be added in the future for spiders, centipedes, and other critters once the rest of the spelunking system is done.

in order to use a ladder.

And then:

Also selling: Amazing Ladder Begone! Simply place the Ladder Begone on the other side of the wall, (The side with the gobos) before a siege, hook it up to a lever, and after you push the switch, a patented spring-loading vibration system* shakes and knocks down the ladder! Its that simple!

*- Note: the traps need to be reset manually, and the ladder falling down would only make those goblins fall 1 z-level. Yet, if it was one of those new-fangled multiple z-level ladders on the otherhand...SPLAT!  :D

No, no, no, that's for cats that can climb upward, but not downward, hence getting stuck in trees so to speak.

Seriously though, cats are good climbers and could certainly handle a ladder.

Oh, certainly. My family had several cats that lived out in the garage (roughly the size of a small barn), specifically in the ceiling area. The primary way for them to get up or down was -- you guessed it -- a ladder  :)

And if a dwarf walks under one of the ladders he will be the next dwarf selected for a beating by the nobles.
