Similar suggestions

I was thinking that you could build garbage bins as sort of miniature refuse stockpiles. Dwarves could automatically generate their own hauling task, even if the labour wasn't enabled, if they or their pet produce a by-product and there is space in a garbage bin nearby. Miasma could have a reduced severity if it is generated in a garbage bin and the whole bin could be taken to the refuse pile and emptied(temporarily disabling the building). You could put one in your dining room and have your dwarves dump all their bones, shells, and seeds in it, or have one outside the butcher's for chunks, maybe even use one for dumping goblin loot...

great idea so a bin dwarfs would dump refuse into and when full it gets dumped outside. But the bin would minimize or not generate miasma?

I figure that smelling a dead rat in a bin is not as bad as seeing a dead rat on the ground. The bins could be sort of a miniature refuse stockpile with a limited range that all dwarves would put stuff into.

You can already do this. Make a 1x1 tile refuse stockpile and then use the "take from pile" function to have your dwarves carry waste from here to the primary refuse stockpile.

But yes, waste at these "secondary" piles will generate miasma, so make sure you have people ready at all times to haul stuff out of there.

I was about to say that.  However, miasma reduction by using a bin would be nice...

Perhaps you could have a dump immediately/dump when full toggle on each bin?

A mini-stockpile as it stands is missing one very important detail: the use of bins to reduce the number of hauling jobs. A two-tile stockpile with the bins alternated would help with that.

That said, it looks like some of the refuse problem won't remain in the next version - fishes will get deboned when they're prepared at the fishery, for instance. Still leaves plant seeds, but those aren't refuse anyway.

Bump for justice.

It's counter-intuitive, at least to an Englishman, that bins assigned to a refuse stockpile are not filled with rubbish (seeing as bins is UK English for trash cans).

Language foibles aside, it still seems weird to be fair.

I would like to see the refuse stockpile merged with the garbage zone functionality, so that a refuse stockpile placed over a hole will cause the dwarves to toss their refuse into the hole to whatever's below
that way, a long hole down from the dining room straight into the magma or whatever could serve as a very dwarfly garbage bin.  Or garbage chute, in this case.

(unfortunately the existing garbage zone doesn't allow for this, as refuse has to be explicitly marked for disposal to end up in the garbage pile, plus the nearest garbage zone isn't always the one used)
