1. Dwarf Fortress
2. Medieval Total War
3. Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion
4. Fragile Allegiance
5. Age of Wonders

The first is a given. Two and three I played to death. First MTW 1 for like ... a couple of hundred hours and then the expansion for another couple of hundred hours. The only game I played more than MTW was World of Warcraft, but I'll be damned if I am putting that game in my top 5. World of Warcraft sucks you dry and is the online equivalent of crack.

Fragile Allegiance ... God, I loved that game. Right now, I feel the urge to boot it up again and start nuking some Rigellians. I hate the Rigellians. Damn brown sniveling aliens, nuking my colonies (literally, they shot over a dozen nukes and each flashed the screen, tauntingly) and then claiming it was MY fault. They got the message when my Devestator missile (aka Asteroid Killer) vaporised one of their mining colonies into very small chunks. ... Alright, tonight when I get home from my exams, I'm so gonna nuke them again.

Age of Wonders narrowly won from the first X-Com. I liked it for its art style, it's mechanics and its Orc Warlords. Mmmm, green giant armour-plated machines of death and destruction ...

If the list allowed for a top 10, I would add:

Homeworld
Homeworld Cataclysm
X-Com
X-com Terror From the Deep
Total Annihilation

Gosh, there have been a lot of great games over the years.

Dwarf Fortress
Alpha Centauri
X-Com Unknown Terror
Dungeon Keeper 2
Portal

Good taste detected

My list:
1. BG2 + expansion (sorry boys and/or girls, I think I've played through it about 8 times, more total time than even DF)
2. DF (awesum, but you already knew that)
3. Hearts of Iron 2 (Good times ruling the world as china)
4. Fallout 1 (Groin shot?)
5. Planescape Torment (Best writing in a videogame, no contest)

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

1. Dwarf Fortress
2. Civilization IV
3. System Shock 2
4. Freespace (I debated between Freespace and Freespace 2, but nothing quite tops that first encounter with the Lucifer...)
5. X-COM
6. Master of Magic
7. Heroes of Might and Magic III
8. TIE Fighter
9. Warhammer 40K: Dark Crusade
10. Victoria: Revolutions

I hate lists like this, because even 10 isn't enough to fit in all my favorites.

Also...I've seen a lot of people mentioning Sins of a Solar Empire. Really? It's pretty, but it's about an inch deep. Even Sword of the Stars has more depth of play strategically, IMHO.

I voted!

Just curious, what did everybody else choose to round off their top five?  For me they were:

2. Half Life 2
3. Portal
4. Age of Empires II
5. Il-2 Sturmovik

Although in retrospect, I should have chose Rome: Total War intead of AoEII.

And here I thought I was the only one who played IL-2 around here!

I'd love to vote for it, but the complete absence of anything resembling a single player component makes me hesitate to call it a "game." It's single player is about as prevalent as Battlefield 1942s- that is to say, a vestigal excuse, because the focus of the game is on providing an engine for multi-player.

I'm happy to see people remember X-COM, not to mention Freespace.

Me, my top list would include those, as well as Homeworld, Aces over Europe/Pacific, Aces of the Deep, Red Baron, (those Dynamix sim titles were amazing,) and even Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries.

  • Dwarf Fortress
  • Doom
  • Sim City Classic
  • Escape from Monkey Island
  • Grim Fandango

I'd probably have wanted the last two switched, but was too lazy.

1. Morrowind
2. DF
3. Deus Ex
4. Wurm Online
5. No One Lives Forever 2

I would have voted for Chrono Trigger or Pokemon too, but since it's a computer-only poll... Anyway, when will the result be published ?

For people who are expecting a sims/halo final will hopefully be pleasantly surprised...the readers (and writers for that matter) of Pcgamer generally have pretty good tastes...I think pretty much all of the games that have been regularly voted for were in there last year and Df (I think it was...but I cant be bothered to back it up by flicking through all the old mags...  ;))

Lots of thanks to all those who voted DF! Would love to see it score highly this year!
