Random Icons
« on: January 04, 2010, 06:55:31 pm »

These just popped into existence this morning directly in my C drive, I did not put them myself and I find them rather untidy. Does anyone know where they came from and why they are here? Would removing them cause any instability?

I first discovered them during the use of Avast and Spybot S&S as a routine scan.

Windows is actually surprisingly difficult to manually destabilize purposefully. I once took a fresh install of XP and deleted everything it would let me delete from the /windows folder. It recreated most of what it wanted when I reset it, and worked fine.

I'd say stuff it all into a folder and compress it. The .dlls look suspicious to me. If nothing happens after a few days, they should be safe to delete. Be sure to watch for respawns.

I've done a small web search, and it appears this HAS happened before.

Now that I think of it I did install torchlight and noticed after the installation that steam was doing something mildly unusual, it was trying to install direct x 9.0c(which I already had) and something else, almost certainly had something to do with these mysterious files. By the way those eulas appear to pertain to "MICROSOFT VISUAL C++ 2008 FEATURE PACK REDISTRIBUTABLE RUNTIME LIBRARIES ".

Other forums have said that removal is safe and will have no effect on the installed game or (hopefully) anything else.

And after a little more looking around it appears this is a known torchlight installation bug.

Smartest thing to do... I usually find some other guy who had the exact similar problem I'm having (or very similar)...   You gotta love the web...
