Also isn't there a wrapper version now that doesn't require an install?

Yes, the portable version. Also fix a lot of the installation oddities (like game crashing if OS not using "." for dates).

I suggest people of only using that version.

Personally, I've always thought of Aurora as less of a game and more a story simulator. I mean, it has the basics of a game, but I think trying to treat it as one will result in disappointment.

Instead, if you're a fan of novels like the Honorverse or various other spacebattle stuff and always thought "man, I wish I could be controlling this" then it might be the game for you.

That feeling when 214 AMMs race (or crawl rather, they are only at 15000km/sec) towards your fleet.
Unless my escorts decide to switch to self only for a salvo or two I can reliably shoot 160 of them down in each salvo. maybe a couple more with my other energy weapons, but not that many, and another few more with the around 12 AMM launchers I have in my fleet. This is going to be exciting.

Aurora Challenge: You are Xenophobic High Supreme Imperial Commander God Number One. All must bow before you.

Start a new game:

1: 0 starting NPRs
2: 100% NPR generation Chance
3: 100% difficulty setting
4: 100 million loyal subjects.
5: Research should be set as TN with 100,000 research points and random tech.
6: No starting ships or PDC bases.
6: Choose a government and use whatever starting facilities come with it.
7: Build and explore until alien contact.
8: Cease all explorations.
8: Exterminate or assimilate new alien race at all costs.
9: Add 100% to the difficulty level and save. So after conquering the first aliens you would be at 200% difficulty.
10: Continue exploring and conquering and after each one add another 100% to the difficulty level (don't forget to save).
11: ???
12: Profit.

How far can you go? After conquering 9 alien civilizations you would be at 1000% difficulty. That would be a tough one I think. Since I usually play at 200-300% I really don't know. I am starting a new game right now. If anyone wants to try also, make sure and post your results.

Note: It is important to extinguish the aliens asap because if not they will start exploring and unlocking new aliens. That WILL eventually snowball and your game becomes a nightmare of 5 second increments and slow turn processing. you can always turn off the 50% NPR generation temporarily if your having troubling dealing with a particular civilization. Playing this way you can easily go for 100's of years and still have pretty quick turn processing. I would say that SM generating a small pirate faction and occasionally wiping out your civilian fleets would be permissible if you want to speed up your turns.

Sincerely,

    Auroras R' Fun

Set spawn chance to 100%.  That percent is the chance that a randomly spawned system that HAS a world that fits within the (rather large) minimum parameters for a race to exist, and not just per system.

Otherwise a pretty decent idea, though just a change to how a lot of people play to increase difficulty as you play.

Set spawn chance to 100%.

yeah good idea, changed. I usually get pretty lucky with the default 30% chance and find aliens all the time though. But your right, for this challenge 100% would be best.

Meh, with conditions like that you should be starting at 500% difficulty. The only reason I'm not saying 1000% is because it'll take you a year or three to get ship production into full swing. Population is the single greatest limiting factor on how quickly you can expand, and 1 billion is a lot at the start; that means that if you go with any of the half-decent governments you're going to have a ton of starting installations; High Imperial whatever even fits the tagline, and it's pretty much second-best after Meritocracy.

High Imperial only has few labs though. I started with 11 in a standard pop game.

I think your right, I restarted with 1/10th the population and research. After designing my first ship I realized this was going to be too easy. How difficult is 1000%? Wouldn't they have 10X the population and research as you?

IIRC the difficulty setting only affects their starting population, installations, and fleet sizes, not their tech level -- at least, the last time I ran into a newly spawned 1000% difficulty NPR they had something like seven or eight hundred ships at around TL3-4. It's a good way to get a different sort of difficulty, since most difficulty in Aurora comes from running into high tech enemies. Once you're at TL7-8, an absolutely massive horde of lower tech ships is actually fairly effective at challenging you (at least in comparison to slowly watching your campaign die from delays stemming from Invader interactions with other AI).

True, I misspoke. Meritocracy is, IIRC, hands-down the best in terms of starting facilities (with the default 500m pop, it gives 30 labs and 180,000 starting tech points). High Imperial Monarchy has the best post-start base modifiers, however: 0 Xenophobia, 5 Determination, 10 Trading, 10 Diplomacy, 10 Expansionism, and 10 Militancy. Not the best in any one, but wholly positive across the board (Hive Mind is better if you just want to eat and kill). They don't actually do much apart from Diplomacy, which makes it easier to get concessions &c from NPRs, but they're numbers and numbers are important.  :P

700-800 ships? Ugh, I haven't even met 100 ships of my 1000% NPR, and it is a couple years old. I am in their homesystem now (at 1km/sec as they destroyed all the fuel tanks on two of my cruisers. At least they've got damage controls.).

Oh, by 'newly spawned', I meant only a couple decades old in a 120 year old campaign -- they'd been triggered by some Swarm Queens that were blocking my expansion and spent that time in a cycle with the Swarm, building up ships in response to it and feeding it more resources in turn.

I hope the swarm is far away from them (2 known systems so far), the game is running slow enough already.
If I wasn't writing an AAR I probably wouldn't continue. :D

I have been playing a reunification game myself. Pretend all oxygen-breathing aliens are human variant from ancient empire, engineered for various planets. No genocide allowed because it's too easy. All oxy-breathers must be conquered and made into loyal citizens.
